ya I just meant in the 470's case, the gtx 295 can be found for like $260 or cheaper and performs at or above 480 performance and may or may not be more efficient lol2.gif

I wish they'd benchmark the 4870x2 and GTX295 in ALL of the new games, they still are very competitive. Great for people like me who have alot of games to catch up on in DX10/DX10.1 , and still perform better in those modes than most of the newer kids on the block for much cheaper!

:withstupid:

For such a minimal FPS jump , I would go with the cheaper option of the 6870 too.

And more efficient option!!

How come the 6870 are so damn cheap right now? It seems pretty suspicious to me. The performance doesn't seem to be very different from the GPUs that came before, neither in a good or bad way, so what made them cost 200$ less?

IMO Competition with nvidia. Their GTX 460 is a real threat to AMD. Its relatively inexpensive and performs bloody well. Also an attempt to stimulate the market. Theres a hell of a lot of older GPUS out there that need a more compelling argument to jump to the new gear and even a medium sized jump in performance will be taken up if it can be done at the right price.

Not yet.. The fully unlocked gf104 will be ;) the gtx 460 is not up to full potential missing 48 sp's. That would lower the gap btwn the gtx 460 and 6870. Also the infamous dual gf104 (if it ever comes out) would blow ati's 6970 into the dust. But finally the 5990 ati's flagship that nvidia can't counter until atleast 6 more months. But in the end nvidia still made a beast of a dx11 card while ati still for some reason went with using a tessellation unit instead of letting its shaders help out, letting nvidia have the crown in future dx11 games.

Thats a very technical way of looking at it and I dont think has much bearing on the original question as to why are cards getting discounted. I was looking at it from a marketing and market position point of view.

Regardless of its absolute performance against other cards or the future potential of the GF104, the GTX460 is considered to be the sweet spot in the market right now. Its a great seller and a great performer for the cost. I believe thats the ground that the 6850 and 6870 cards are aimed at. The mid tier and below is where the real money is made and is what keeps Graphics card manufacturers in business. The vast majority of consumers will never go near GTX 470, GTX480, HD5870, HD6900's. they are price conscious.

Correct! i'll never pay more than $300 for a video card, and am unlikely to pay more than $200.
