Because their are health risks involved. When you smoke, and exhale, you are basically shorting the life of the people around you. 2nd hand smoking is very dangerous to the public health. Just by what you say Phil, you seem selfish. Stop thinking about yourself all the time and think about the fact that these places are public areas, If you want to smoke at home and expose your family to 2nd hand smoking and such risks, more power to you. That's not my problem since the home isn't a public domain. But when your out in public, I don't want to inhale what your exhaling. Or better though, don't exhale at all. Just keep it in. Maybe you'll end your life sooner. Better for the rest of society. Also, quit with the alcohol argument. It's totally different. I'll explain more later if anyone wishes for me to.

nothing like a little communism...

what people do in a private business should be determined by the owner of the business.

the iron foot of the government should not determine such things.

you may notice they do not make smoking illegal since that would cost them tax money.

are you starting to notice where their concern really lies?

consumers are quite capable of avoiding places that are distasteful to them.

if there is smoking in a bar or restaraunt, and you do not care for it, go somewhere else.

if there isn't a no smoking establishment, perhaps you should open one.

since people think the majority is for non smoking you should become wealthy rather quickly.

In this state we have one of those 'all public places' bans. As a non-smoker I favor the designated smoking areas idea. The right to smoke vs not breath second hand is a slippery slope imho. So to the fair these rights must compromise. Smokers have a place to do that and the non smokers have the choice not to go to those places.

But to elaborate on something Fanatic said, there are always these bans against smoking although how many people died last year from 2nd had smoke, compare that to how many kids and other innocent people died when they got hit by a drunk driver on his/her way home from the bar. You may say that it's not relevant to this thread but it kinda is, why not ban drinking in public places like they did with smoking. There are kids and innocent people dieing that can't even drink or weren't even in a bar and definitely don't have the option to leave and go to another business.

This is crazy. Drunk driving is bad, yes. But how do you follow that course of logic to get to banning drinking in public? Wouldn't the logical course of action (to prevent deaths to drunk driving) be to outlaw drunk driving? Haven't we done that?

THIS is why the drinking and auto-pollution points go nowhere. It's not the same thing. If you have a problem with drinking or pollution, do something about it, but I'm pretty sure smoking in public doesn't really qualify as doing something about it. These comparisons all just boil down to "well there's things I don't like, so me doing this is OK". That's horrible logic and contributes nothing to the discussion but rather just side tracks it into other debates about whatever topic you're failing to link to the original one.

What I do respect is Fanatic's point about being hounded. You stay out of my way, I'll stay out of yours. That's my opinion. The non-smokers are winning the battle (smoking is being banned more and more in public every day). So the least they can do is leave the smokers alone when they're in their few bastions of freedom they still have left. The outright content and judgment is stupid and just proves you're not in it for air quality or what-not, but rather just to be a jerk.

Here in colorado, we have a state ban on smoking in public. however I see alot of designated smoking areas outside, they just have to be 15 feet away from the front door. Also banned in the casinos.

I dont care if other people smoke, if you want to do it fine. but it just pisses me off thinking that I could die a slow death because of YOU. someone i might of never of met, hell if you hit me with a car, at least I know who you are and or its a quick death.

Also the topic of smoking at home, your home your free to do what you want. but I hope to god you dont smoke around your kids... I know lots of people who do, how can you not even think of your kids. :angry2: :typing:

:withstupid: I could not agree more. I smoke and was once asked by a waitress in a restraunt to please put it out so I did, I threw it on the carpet and mashed it out with my foot into the carpet...
Yea, you're cool! Why the hell would you do something retarded like that, just because you were politely asked to put out the cigarette you were smoking?!

I hate when somebody smoke in a public place. Here in Quebec, Canada there is a range from a building that you can't smoke, as Virus said, but I don't know how much it is exactly. When someone smokes at the bus stop I'm going where the smoke should tavel against the wind in order not to breathe it. When I'm walking outside and someone is smoking , I stop breathing the time I'm gone far enough from him.

But it doesn't mean that I don't like smokers. My grand-father WAS smoking a month ago(He quit, hoping he won't start again) and I love him. But he knew most people don't like when someone smoke near them. He used to smoke alone, outside or inside his house under the kitchen hood, not to get his house smelling. I have nothing to say about smokers like this, but the ones who smoke in public places...
