If we are going to have a gun control argument, it might be a good idea to take it to a new thread?

Either that or accept that it's all been played out before and leave it for the moment.

How about what you think of Obama's position in regards to technology (something we all obviously share an interest in).

DailyTech published a short article today outlining what the likely positions on certain issues may be.

Sounds like Obama's position on Internet issues would find no enemies here.

Not necessarily true. Personally, I was very disappointed with him when he voted for the FISA bill allowing retroactive immunity to the telecoms. He claims to be a supporter of privacy, but I think that vote disproves it.

I do hope he battles bandwidth caps. I saw that AT&T is demoing a capped service now, and I really don't like the implications of that. I'm sure the ISPs would love to have cellular-style billing plans some day, and I hope something stops them. Capping the internet would severely change the way people use it, and I think in a negative way. I'm all for going after the abusers who max their downstream on torrents 24/7, but I think there's plenty of better ways to do that if that was their real goal.

The technology discussion is a good one, and I don't mean to take away from it, but I had to post this...

I just read that Obama is appointing Jennifer Granholm to his economic advisory board during the White House transition. Jennifer Grahholm?!

For those that don't know, she's the governor of my fair state of Michigan. Michigan, the state that currently is in the absolute worst economic condition (AFAIK) of them all. We literally just ran out of money last year and almost had to shutdown the state government. Maybe he's looking for advice on what not to do, but this just doesn't make any sense to me.

Wow, lets hope they have her there to hear her ideas and to the opposite :)

Uh... in the city of Chicago, teens in high school have been required to do community service for quite some years. What's wrong with being required to serve your community a few hours each year? I don't see how that would even be considered "slavery" as you so put it.

Uh...required community service falls under "involuntary servitude" which is prohibited by Amend. 13 of the United States Constitution.

Now, of course, the Constitution does not officially recognize minors, so the stuff in high school is technically allowed. But forcing this on college students stands in direct violation of the Constitution.

I don't really think that's a big deal.

Back when I was in high school it was graduation requirement that all students must have 15 hours of community service. It was also required to be done if you wanted to get a parking spot at the school.

Its becoming more common that colleges are adding community service as part of their graduation requirements.

I don't agree with the number of hours he wants the students to do but calling it slavery is kinda of an extreme way of looking at it.

the socialism is already being attempted...

hope you libs are happy...

Socialist to bring back slavery...

Are you serious? Community service in middle and high school is about the most normal thing ever! It really is sad how everyone who is not happy with Obama tries to burn him. Calling community service slavery, this thread gets more quoteworthy material by the hour!
