wow!

thats prolly the reason of why i'm not going to install Beta 2 now...

BTW, if it is a BIOS issue (wich i've never heard that an OS would write to), you can get a brand new BIOS chip from DFI, install it, and done. but that's odd....

Apparently the Vista rating is just based on your weakest piece of hardware, so you could get a 5.9 or something for everything but your small hard-drive and get knocked down to a 3 or a 4.

That kinda sucks!

Apparently it's to help consumers figure out where their PC is weak, so that they can upgrade accordingly :D

Figure out....right, more like confusing naive users. I think it might be based on a sliding scale, ie your graphics card can outweigh the rating of your CPU, or the rating of your memory matters more than available hard drive space.

Last Edit;

I dropped my CpU Mhz from 2.7GHz (270x10) to 2Ghz (200x10) and my RAM from 270Mhz to 200Mhz to see how it would affect my rating.

My CPU rating went from 5.3 to 4.8 actually 4.46 rounds to 4

My RAM rating went from 5.9 to 5.5 actually 4.68 rounds to 5

My overall rating remained the same (3)....so much for the rating system. eh?

I used the 88.61 graphics drivers and the latest Sil3114 Non-Raid drivers for XP. You didn't instal the Sil3114 drivers? Or do you mean the nVraid drivers? Are you planning on using Raid-0? It seem to be a hit or miss getting it to work optimal.

Beta Driver - nForce – Windows Vista x86 Beta 2

Sil Download Center

The Audio drivers are included in the nForce driver package, you have to manuall install them using Device Manager. You can use Windows Update for the Audio drivers as well, which leads me to your last question. If you used a legit Product Key from Microsoft you can activate your copy of Vista indefinately, as far as I know.

Edit;

The expiration for Vista beta 2 and RC1 seem to be June 1st ,2007.

Smartguardian installed fine for me using XP SP2 compatibility mode, but you might have to ok the program to run every time you start it.

From Windows Help

What is the Windows System Performance Rating?

The Windows System Performance Rating measures the capability of your computer's hardware configuration and expresses this measurement as a whole number. A higher performance rating means your computer will perform better and faster, especially when performing more advanced and resource-intensive tasks, than a computer with a lower performance rating. You can use the performance rating number to confidently buy programs and other software that are rated to match your computer's performance level. For example, if this computer has a System Performance Rating of 3, then you can confidently purchase any software designed for this version of Windows that requires a computer with a rating of 3 or less.

...

The rating system is designed to accommodate advances in computer technology, so the standards for each level of the rating system stay the same. For example, a computer rated as a 4 should remain a 4 unless you decide to upgrade the computer's hardware. As technology continues to improve, additional System Performance Ratings will be introduced.

So I guess Software will be branded using this rating number, kind of similar to TV ratings. I wonder if it will catch on, seems kind of flawed if you take my previous results, when I slowed down my PC drastically, into consideration.

If you use the product key MS emailed you... they state once activated it's good till june2007....and each key is good for 10 activations...

EDIT: you can also get to the performance and reliability monitors by going to the performance and ratings utility and clicking the advanced tab...it's in there...

I googled it, and it looks like you are right, june 1st 2007. Apparently that applies to RC1 as well.

I had to switch to the normal forum text editor, as the advanced editor seemed to have several issues with the new Internet Explorer; trying to select single words for hyperlinks or trying to change font color of selected text. Does anyone else have those problems?
