Unofficial Opteron 939 Thread

Recommended Posts

Me I need a new motherboard soon, I'm looking at possibly a DFI Infinity It's the one with the single 16x pci-e, The LP Ultras are very nice motherboards, Expert or Not, Right now My cash is rather limited and My Opteron 165 (OSA165DAA6CD) is rather constrained as I can't access the 2nd core or use It for that matter, Windows XP Pro x32 sp2 sees two cpus/cores in Device manager, But programs like cpu-z 1.31(cpu toggle greyed out), Central Brain ID 7704 1211 sees 2 physical cores of course, wcpuid only shows one processor in the drop down menu and Crystal cpu Id also shows only one of course. Bios for the MSI K8T Neo2-F MS-6702E v1.0 motherboard is the latest official bios at 9.2(via k8t800 pro chipset). But at 2.817GHz It's one heck of an overclock at 56.25%. :)

Hey there DOGGO1, it seems that most of the 146's and 148's are cabne or cabye steppings and if you look through this thread there is a new one out. I dont think you can go wrong with any of them from what I have read.

Multipliers are unlocked downwards, what it means is like my Opty 165 the highest multiplier is x9 and you can use x9 and lower.

"IHS removed" means that you remove the heatspreader yourself and have the core itself bare, like this....

http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/showthread.php?t=17992

I strongly suggest that you read up and decide after if you want to do it.

The xp 90 and xp120 are both excellent heatsinks, I have the xp120 myself and almost on par with my watercooling setup.

As far as dividers go, here is a great thread by the MAN himself...

Here is a great psu guide too...

Look though here for cpu comparisons.....

Welcome to the streets!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If I buy this opteron from new egg, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16819103600 how will I know which stepping it has? Is it just one of those things where you buy it and find out when you get it?

I'm referring to this--I don't understand what the "CABNE" stuff means heh.

Single Core Steppings: The list below is a general guide to the strength of steppings from best to worst (as determinded by their probability of reaching 3GHz):

1. CABNE 05xx (excluding 0540) / CABYE 0540

2, CABNE 0540 / CABYE 05xx (excluding 0540)

3. CAB2E 05xx

4. CABGE 05xx

Yeah, that is how it happens, you won't know until you get it home. At least that is how it is with the EGG. Some places will actually go out and select specific steppings if you ask nicely but this is very rare if your not "In With Them". Like some have said, most of the newer steppings have done very well. When I got mine I was bummed because at the time my stepping was not very well known. But now about 8 days later and lots of testing, tweaking, testing, tweaking........ I have found out the CACJE 0546 is really good. Let up know what steppings you get?

There is a great thread here called "Overclocking Database" in the overclocking section which has many different systems and all the relevent settings used, it is a great resource. The CABNE 0546 has proven to be a decent overclocker, like most of the Opty's (144, 146, 148, etc...). Unfortunetly the best way to see how high it will go is testing and tweaking. I know some members who have the same stepping and have gone to above 2.8 while still being stable (Stable as described in the overclockers database) on stock voltage and stock heatsink.

As far as decent RAM is concerned, again the best place to look is in the database, you will be able to see different setups along with what RAM modules they are using. It is hard to say without knowing more about your current setup, if you get the time try to fill in your system specs to help us help you! Take it easy, good luck!

I have a pair of single core opterons that I have been playing with and thought I would add mine to this list. The first is my 148 which is the CAB2E 0545 FPMW which after a lot of burn in and testing seems to be running stable at 2.8 using 1.425v. It will run SuperPI and most things at stock voltage running 2.8 but will fail prime about 2 hours into it when using the default voltage. It will run Prime95 and all other test for over 20 hours at default voltage and 2.75 ghz

The second is my 146 which is one of the CABYE 0540 FPMW, this chip is pretty sweet but seems to hit the same limits on default voltage as the 148 does. The difference is that the 148 peaks about 2.95 with any amount of voltage as far as running Prime or SuperPI while the 146 will go as high as 3.05gh and still run prime but requires 1.6v and I simply won't run a chip at that voltage for more then 15 or 20 minutes on air so I can't say how stable it really is. Screen shot was taken while I was seeing how high my memory would run stable.

I had to alter the text, I had no idea html would be disabled.

Got some new RAM, so far pretty happy with them. Once my GeiL are returned from RMA I'll probably keep them as my backup. Going to run OCCT and Prime95 now...

I have a 148 CABYE 0543 FPMW - and get up to 3.0GHz - with air cooling.

Up to 2.95GHz SuperPI 32M Stable.

But can´t pass 3.055GHz - even with more vcore ... - it´s not stable - but i think its just memory tweak since i´m running up 1:1 - Gskill PC4800 r0x

Anyone know any memory tweaking guide for opteron ?!

Cool when i get more time i need to work with my OC too busy w/other peeps stuff our CABYE 0543 seems to be a good stepping many getting to 2.95

SuperPI32 completion does not mean your CPU is stable. Use OCCT or better yet Prime95 to check for true stability. Although others will argue that Prime95 is "buggy", or the common "I can pass OCCT but Prime fails after 1 second". No matter what its the only true test that will gain you bragging rights, if that's what you seek.
