I ordered my Opteron 144 S939 boxed today, i wonder what stepping i get.

But i let you know tomorrow...

First should i get some good 2Gb pc4000 memory, can't get it anywhere :(

Running a RAM divider doesn't make much difference to the performance on the AMD64 / Opterons.

it could:

my 144 doen't like dividers that mutch: no boot if I use a divider under 9/10....

I'll get my gskill stick in a few days and I'll report back: I suspect my ballistix to be the troublemaker.....

OK, i'll get an opteron in a week or so - what would be difference between venus and hammer cores? Just warranty 1 year against 3 years?

Here are the link for venus: http://www.amdcompare.com/us-en/opteron/de...opn=OSA144BNBOX

and for the hammer: http://www.amdcompare.com/us-en/opteron/de...pn=OSA144DAA5BN

Dagummit. I thought "hammer" was the basic architecture on which the newer athlons/Opterons were built. Venice, sandy, venus, all of it. I hope that can be clarified by someone....

At any rate I've owned a CABNE 0528 and a CABYE 0540. They were both Venus, two of the three best(proven) steppings ever.

It say on the website that that one is "Hammer" core, as opposed to (not including) Venus? Linkage?

EDIT: Ok. I read up on it some more. AMD's 8th generation processors arewere called the Hammer-based platform. Never encountered an Opteron core that actually got the codename "Hammer". Maybe 940 as you say...

Actually now I am thinking that codename "hammer" is for socket 940 not 939. But then again, under socket 939 there are two different namings: OSA144BNBOX and OSA144DAA5BN. So do you think that one of them is the oem version and the other is retail?

EDIT: sorry if I am threadcrapping, some choices for me: cab2e 0545 / 0546 or cacje 0546 - any comments?
