What's better ATI or nVidia?

This question seems to be asked every other day.

For gaming right now its ATI.

If you do other stuff like video rendering, graphics etc you may want to look at Cuda based programs to see if that is what you need. ATI can't touch Nvidia in that area not even a fight. Nvidia still provides good gaming they just don't have the fastest card at this moment in time.

So, what's the best card on the market right now, and who makes it?

That is a loaded question but performance wise ATI currently resides on top of the hill in both the Single GPU and Dual GPU video card category

They have EyeFinity and Stream

Nvidia Stiill has great cards

They also have proprietary items like 3D Vision and Cuda

In the past Nvidia has been hammered for supposed price gouging and now the shoe is on the other foot with $300 and up price points on the 58XX and 5970 at $600+. And they cant make enough so they will charge MORE to dampen enthusiasm! Explain that one!

Explain it? Supply & demand!

Lol, that isn't price gouging that supply and demand. The same thing happened a while back with the 8800 ultra. There were almost no cards so the market price of the cards was through the roof.

Its far from supply and demand when the original price was high! Before there was a "Supply" problem the price was and is high! Hey we can charge more since we cant make enough ! Does not wash with the public but the waiting lists are still there.

The extra price at least gets you more performance. ATi isn't making single GPU cards for 850 bucks with nearly the same performance as cards hundreds of dollars less.

The GT300 may not even beat the 5970 in games or benchmarks but i'm sure it'll be priced like it does . Nvidia has to conform to the ATX spec just like ATi did. Given the same 300w envelope, even down clocked to fit the standards like ATi had to, I do not think Fermi will beat the 5970 cards in gaming, but I bet they will be encoding and folding BEASTS that can crunch numbers like we never imagined. As a huge, seemingly power hungry die, we do not know just how well Fermi can perform when limited to a 300w envelope.

It will be a bit until we see much faster cards since we are now reaching actual motherboard power constraints due to the aging ATX specs, and manufacturers need to start adding additional power connectors near the PCI-E slots like some have done in the past. Nobody wants to release a card that will be branded as non-standard and incompatible.

Brands and companies should be transparent, the only logical way to purchase anything is by the price to performance ratio.

Unless your rich of course..

You do realize that's exactly what supply and demand is...right? In a capitalist market they can charge whatever they want for their products. If ATI decided to make the 5970 a $1000 part not only would they be perfectly able to...but they'd still sell them. Sure, people would complain, but that's what people are best at.

They don't just set arbitrary price points to screw people over. :)
