DrAwesomePhD Posted April 13, 2005 Posted April 13, 2005 Alright, so heres the symptoms... my key wont turn in the keyhole, but it goes all the way in. I asked my friends yesterday and they said that i had to just jerk the wheel, but the wheel wont turn more than 20degrees in either direction, it seems to be lcoked as well... does anyone know how to fix the car??? Some_Guy_ Posted April 13, 2005 Posted April 13, 2005 If the key won't turn, it's usually because of the column lock. Try turning the steering wheel as far as you can left or right (it'll only be a few degrees) and hold it there, and try turning the key. If it doesn't work, try turning it the other way. What usually causes this is the lock bolt in the column is jammed against the plate it goes through because the steering box is trying to twist the wheel against the bolt. The bolt won't slide through just from the tiny bit of pressure you can apply to it with the key. Sorry if this doesn't make any sense. I really need to wake up. drewkivela Posted April 13, 2005 Posted April 13, 2005 yeah, its usually the column lock in this case like everyone else is saying, pull the wheel to the left or right it should do the trick, and make sure its the right key (early mornings) -drew
savethedodobird Posted April 13, 2005 Posted April 13, 2005 Also try putting the key all the way in then pull it out a hare try again pull a little further try again. And just wiggle it around. My dads truck is that way.
SVTmofo Posted May 24, 2005 Posted May 24, 2005 well what kinda car is it for one, and you might need to put a lil butt into turnin the wheel to help unlock it
MasterRex862 Posted May 24, 2005 Posted May 24, 2005 That happened to my mothers Eslcalade, and she freaked the heck out. All I did was jiggle the wheel and turn the key. It rarely happens to my Escort though; my wheel is telescopic.
Phil Posted May 24, 2005 Posted May 24, 2005 If it isn't the column lock, sometimes a squirt of graphite will work.
Folding_Buddha Posted May 24, 2005 Posted May 24, 2005 my say turn the key as hard as you can before you kill yourself and if that does not work ask a mech.
sYstEmATiC Posted May 24, 2005 Posted May 24, 2005 my car does this sometimes, even when the steering colunm lock isnt activated, just turn the key back and forth reel fast while also moving the wheel around. it will turn eventually. Joost27 Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 dont turn the key hard as u can ahah...a mech did that to mine and broke the key off in there..they ahd to get a lock smith to get it out...umm if u have tilt steering sometimes..well in my car u just need to left up on the wheel(dont raise it) just have it in w/e position you usually do with it locked in place and lift up on the wheel slightly..and try that... other than that sounds liek the column lock..or might be worn key..if u have a spare and havent tried yet...try that...
