Whitelightning Posted April 23, 2004 Posted April 23, 2004 Just a quick question ,I just installed a new 120gig maxtor(Had to rma the old one)...I installed win xp pro and I noticed it is only showing 114gig....I am using 2.50gig at the moment. I know that you lose a couple of gig's but 6gigs???
Ziggy54354 Posted April 23, 2004 Posted April 23, 2004 how many bytes is it? The label on the hd shows how many bytes it is. Windows measures gigs slightly different.
Some_Guy_ Posted April 23, 2004 Posted April 23, 2004 It all depends on how the manufacturer calculates their space. 120 GB to Maxtor is 120,000,000,000 Bytes, or, in reality, 114 real GigaBytes
Whitelightning Posted April 23, 2004 Posted April 23, 2004 Maybe it is because i just used a quick format on it...maybe I will do the regular format and see how it goes
ccokeman Posted April 23, 2004 Posted April 23, 2004 i wouldnt waste the time both of my 120gig seagates show the same thing.
Whitelightning Posted April 23, 2004 Posted April 23, 2004 Yeah thats what I figured.......I am just going to leave it as is.....maybe one day when we buy a hard drive we will actually get the full gig's
LobbDogg Posted April 23, 2004 Posted April 23, 2004 If you are really picky about picking up an extra GB at most, you can play around with the cluster sizes and see if you can get some extra space, but to be honest with ya, just stick with the 114. cGrUnDy Posted April 23, 2004 Posted April 23, 2004 Or you can join a group of consumers which is suing the main hdd manufacturers because of the way they label their hdds and misinform on the capacity.
r_target Posted April 23, 2004 Posted April 23, 2004 Isn't it that the manufacturers call a Gig 1,000 bytes and Windows calls a Gig 1024 bytes?
cyberpc04 Posted April 23, 2004 Posted April 23, 2004 Yeah, most hdd manufacturers call a gig 1000 mb but a true gig is 1024 mb. I have a seagate 120 and it only shows 114. If those extra couple gigs matter that much you might want to just go buy another drive. I would join in with the crew that is suing those companies but I just got done with being sued so I don't want to go there again.
