Is the 5850 and 5870 not a good option for Win 7 64bit

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

A former member who lost his ID and had to make a new one to get access.

Anyways, I recently ordered an open-box Asus 5850 DirectCU for $193 but unfortunately it was DOA. I ended up sending it back and thankfully Newegg was nice to not charge me a restocking fee for the returned item + they were paying for my return shipping. Anyways, I had been doing research and trying to find out how well this card has been doing for users. One pattern I found is that most users with Windows 7 64bit were having serious issues of BSOD's and random freezing of their system and could not find out how to get their systems stable when using either the 5850 or the 5870 on their machines.

Now I am kinda stuck making a decision, should I go with the 5850 or 5870 OR look towards Nvidia's offerings (465 or 470). I really liked how well the 5850/5870 are doing compared to the 470/465 but I absolutely dread the issue of unstable drivers with the ATI cards.

I had my fair share of problems with BSOD's when I purchased my MSI 8800gt back in Jan of 2008 but somehow the problem went away after a few months (mature drivers or fresh install of windows??) Bottom line is that I dont want to purchase something that will give me trouble from day one.

So I ask you people here: Should I go with the 5850 or 5870 OR do you guys have an equal or better option from Nvidia (I am willing to spend no more than $250-270) If you guys know a deal somewhere please let me know as well.

Oh and the monitor I have is a 22 inch Samsung with a resolution of 1680x1050.

Specs:

CPU: E6600 OC'd to 3.0GHz

CPU Cooler: Zalman 9500

Board: Asus P5NE-SLI

RAM: GSkill DDR 800 OC'd to 1000 MHz

Video Card: MSI 8800GT

PSU: PC Power and Cooling Silencer Mk II 750W

Soundcard: Creative Xtreme Music (Older model: Large Size)

I have a 5850 on Win 7 64bit and have never had a problem? Only time I've gotten a BSOD is trying to find stable OC's nor have I had issues with drivers, but maybe I'm the lucky one?

Your def not the "lucky one" ;) The 5800 series work just fine on Windows 7 64bit! Just like Toasty, the only BSOD's I have ever gotten were my own fault pushing the overclocks on my cards! I have owned 4 or 5 different 5870's, 3 5830's and run a 5970 in one of my systems now, and each card worked fine on my OS, which is Win7 Ultimate 64bit! However, I would suggest the 6870, less heat and power, almost the same performance as the 5870 running 1 card setups, and 2x6870 > 2x5870 due to improved scaling from AMD!

I suspect maybe a bad driver install, just flush them out when you get the new card.

MSI 460 1GB Hawk $160 after MIR

This 5850 here seems to be a steal for $175 after MIR

Here's a 470GTX for $215 after MIR

6870 for $240 after MIR

Here's a 5870 for $250

It's up to you which care you'd want to get, I'd say get one of the cheaper cards (460 1GB or 5850) since they'd be PLENTY for your resolution

They are a fantastic card.. Over clocks so well and because u got the direct cu one u can over clock it massively.. I got my non voltage adjustable to 920/1200 up from 765/1000.. So with voltage... 1000mhz shouldn't be too hard hahah

I've had a 5850 , 5870 and 5970 and all of them worked great on Windows 7 .
