robAP Posted January 25, 2009 Posted January 25, 2009 (edited) well just as an idea, I recently replaced my x1900xt with an HD4650. the performance is probably about 5% better, and i have the ability to get DX 10 when i move to vista....also its SILENT compared to the former card. My decision to do that was to save energy, get a bit better next-gen future-profing, and i can sell the old card for what i paid for the new one on ebay...the apple guys like to re-flash it to use on their macs. so for 120 #, eh go with a 4800 series card. price vs. performance. tkrow21 Posted January 25, 2009 Posted January 25, 2009 So you have around $170 to spend. If you can stretch your budget to $180 you should buy an HD 4870 512mb version. And if you can't spend that much, I would look into a 1GB HD4850.
Ricky C Posted January 25, 2009 Posted January 25, 2009 I had a 1950pro for about 6 months before it broke and I got sent the Ati HD3850 as a replacement. Performance wise it blows the 1950pro away as it has approximately double the benchmarking score of it on 3d mark 06. You can pick the card up for about
Hyper Threaded Posted January 25, 2009 Posted January 25, 2009 Dead set on ATI? You can get a 9800GT with your budget. Very potent card for gaming and folding, plus you save a bit of money.
CCOOLLIINN Posted January 25, 2009 Posted January 25, 2009 (edited) Thank's for the replies. Looks like the 4850 or 4870, I looked at 3000 cards but I feel better value to be had by 4000 cards. At the present the 4870 is out of my price range so the 4850 is maybe the one. If I do go with a 4850 which make would be best, my choice would be Sapphire but would like to hear your choices and advice. An HD4830 outperforms the 9800GT at a lower cost. Nvidia is only a wise choice is SLI is wanted or if you just require a LOT of power (4870+). Is the cooler which comes with the 4850 up to it, or is it best fitting a aftermarket model like the Artic cooling Accelero X2 fitted to my X1950pro.
