  1. And boy are the temps interesting. I was using an IC carbon thermal pad and was having good results. Under an H115i rgb Corsair system, I could run 75% fans and see 80 deg.c at 100% load....I'm running the same equipment on the 3700x, and I am seeing 4.2 ghz ALL-core at 91c. That's very close to the 96 max but that's also at 100% fan on the rad and pump speed. I think I'm going to have to just give in and order up some thermal paste like I used to run. HW monitor is showing 119 watts as well (Where the 1500x topped 80 watts)....I definitely should look at the block/cpu interface. As the AIO heatsoaks, the temp is trickling up just ever so slowly. 92 now and seems to have settled. The case has good flow. variances: HWmonitor is the monitoring software. OCCT for the stress test is saying the CPUtin is 68.5, but I'm wondering what it's using to measure. HWmonitor is ttops or near top of lists of best monitoring software and seeing what it showed last time with the 1500x, it's probably accurate. Any ideas on ta better way to measure here? Or am I on track. I'm suspicious becuase the AIO system is a 250watt unit......or should be. I updated the BIOS before all of this, and the only thing I did after setting everything to default settings is activate the XMP memory profile for the team dark 3200 cl14 memory. Otherwise I left things alone. However it's not adjusting cpu speed all over the place, but seems rock solid at 4.2. I will look into things to make sure it's not accidentally OC'd. Board: msi b450m mortar titanium (the mosfets and board temps were 65 c or below during this) MEM: samsung b-die pc3200 cl14. Thoughts? (Idle temps have come down to 44 deg since I shut down the test.
  2. Last fall I bought a 1500x a year+ after it's introduction for $135 and only just now is it back to that as a regular price. (It's comfortably running 4ghz all core daily under an H115i pro rgb pulling 81w @ load.) and it's just a place holder until the 7nm process came out. Well it's out now, and I'm curious if all of you market followers think we can expect a slight price drop for the holidays like we saw in the 2k series. I ssaw the 2700x debut at $330 and in the days leading up to black friday saw it drop to $310 and then hit a 1 day black friday/cmonday of $270 and then go back up. Should we expect similar behavior for the 3k series? I'm wanting to finish my plan with the 3900x in my b450 (yes its a good one for that) and sit for the next 10 years like i did with the x4 965. If this follows last years example we may see the 3900x for $450 or 425 briefly, Especially when the 3950 hits shelves. What say you? Am I thinking logically or should I see someone about apparent dementia.
  3. something over 15% I think is what I saw. All my notes kinda got thrown out. Were I to do it again I might have opted for the 2600G and run the 1070 through the APU and out the onboard HDMI to attach freesync to the output. I would have had a decent OC as well on that to not quite what I have now but close enough to accomplish the upgrade goal. I'm curious to see what APU ryzen 3 chips will be like.
  4. Speaking of Lan Parties...Not sure if you've seen one lately, but I used a DFI Lanparty NF-II ultra-b (can they get any more unnecessary in naming things?) board for a couple years. So an event like that was so popular it creeped into advertising. Like "gaming" is today. The box for it even had a hoodie sweater guy. Complete with blurred cans of mountain dew and a can of Bawlz. Because if I wanted any image to promote what I would become if I used a product, that's exactly what I wanted to be! An over caffeinated dude with bad posture and a beige desktop! yessssss. (not my image...)
  5. My first performance build in '03 used the Thermaltake Volcano 12 heatsink. Manual speed control knob. It was the hot item on newegg at the time. When booting up BF1942 on a 45% overclock, it was a howling hairdryer!!

    Ya'll Won't Believe It

My signature has my new new build in it. The xmas prize lasted 8+ years with only 2 gpu swaps and a memory kit. it was time. But I do need to also second the comment about Gigabyte's VRM. I went with MSI's b450 board cause their VRM's are solid and quite capable, at least on this board.

    Ryzen 2600X or Ryzen 7 1700?

I suggest asking yourself how long you plan on keeping this 8 core chip. I was looking at the 2700x but since I knew the 3000 series would be coming next year, regardless of any announcements ahead, I knew it would be wise to wait until then if I was planning on keeping the next build for as long as my last one (8 years) so I once I saw the 1500x on sale for $139, that was the answer. I'll run it until thanksgiving next year when the 3700x hits on sale. Reason being, the 3000 series will be on the AM4 socket, so the 1500x, which BTW is running at 4.0 on all cores [email protected], hums along just fine on pc3200 ram. If you have to build a system right now, like I did, then get everything you need for futureproofing, and grab a 1400x or 1500x or something in that price range and sit for the next year. I wasn't going to spend $300 on the 2700x only for a year later to have something show up for that same price and it be 25% faster/better/stronger. It is a big leap ahead, not just a standard march.

huh....just run some solder lines or some real fine work with a mag glass?
  9. There we go. The 655 pump was in the front under the drive cages. pulled from the res, pumped up to the waterblock which emptied into the radiator windowside and then put the other side back to the res. It all dodged the X1900xt card nicely, which was loud as hell....the only thing that made noise here. I had the 2 disk raid in heat pipe drive coolers (cause really there was nowhere else to put them with the pump taking their space) up in the 5.25 drive bays with a fan flowing on them from the front. I cut the bottom out of the case for the radiator to sit in with a draw through red led fan system. I realize this is on the back of your time frame window, but period correct. I did post a pic of it on and running, reg glow everywhere when all other builds were blue leds, in this forum back in the day but it looks like that thread has been purged. My notes of the time showed something about my socket 939 opteron [email protected] daily. I think the temps maxed at 56?
  10. I JUST combined all my old files into one drive and went through pictures. Umm, I might have erased quite a few images including some build photos. I'll see what I might be able to find, there's a lot. But what I did have was from probably 2005 when I went water cooled in a Cooler Master CM5 case using a pvc pipe resivoir on an AMD XPm thunderbird chip. got 2.6ghz on that. Had red LED fans as well. I then rebuilt it with the 939 opteron chip. I'll look for it and post something. Bought a 90 deg. 24pin adapter a while back. Workin great. Ill try to post a pic of that in play too. REALLY keeps things slim inside.

Oh, man if you caught me a month ago I would have fixed you up. I think. I'm not sure. I just put the old rig in another case and built a new one. Otherwise I would have parted it all out, chip to you, etc. I'm in a quandary about it though. Cause I just scratched the back of the board my 965 is on while doing a heatsink change and now lost memory slots 2 and 4....however that happens. so i'm down to half a 16gig kit on what is destined to be the basement fitness/MAME computer. Should you be looking for a 16gig set or 770 card or something like that I can do a package deal. prices on everything are falling out of the sky this season. message me off topic with the needs.
  12. I'm late to the Ryzen party, but this is the stop gap upgrade chip. I'm waiting for the 3k series ryzen which, for me, will be the 8 core and the one lasting the next 8 years+. In the meantime, I thought I'd see what I can do with this. apparently [email protected] vCore is the sweet spot.1.3625 seems to work well @ 4.0 on cinebench. I'll try to adjust down a little bit towards that once I'm guaranteed stability. Getting 4.1 is lots more voltage, takes 1.425, and [email protected] freezes cinebench. So if i want 4.1 for a daily oc I would have to fry it. So I guess I sort of win a lottery here. I'll play with the memory timings and see if i can run [email protected] timings with the samsung b-die i have. That might really fine tune things. Temps? Using the Corsair H115i platinum RGB pro thing, the one with colors over performance, and see 70c at about 60% fans. If I go 100%, it's loud and only 2-3 deg better.
  13. I've collected these through time. All working system pulls. Using the 770 now even. Got a 1070 to replace it but may sell that later on depending on whatever. Probably keep it until the new amd stuff shows up. Where you see two, i indeed have two. ill cross them off when they sell. evga GTX 770 ($140 shipped) keepin unless i part out a system. evga GTX 560 ($40 shipped) evga GTX 560 ($40 shipped) XFX HD 5850 ($40 shipped) XFX HD 5850 ($40 shipped) Sapphire HD 4850 (wtf? Yeah i still have one. $15 shipped) HD 4650 (lol, was htpc card. $8.43) ill ebay them shortly if no action here. The last two would make great emulator/MAME cards.
  14. eh, didnt work. Logitech tech support, after 2 hours or so, threw in the towel, said the O key can't be programmed and emailed me a 30% off coupon for up to 3 devices from their online store. Not sure if i'm gonna use it for a keyboard. Eying a Ducky One2 mx brown board at the moment. oh well. it was 8 years. I'm guessing at this point their key can be programmed, but the engineers themselves didn't know how through secret key combos randomly discovered by children.
