Is Bulldozer worth waiting for?

Recommended Posts

So I've been looking to upgrade my cpu for a while now, but for me it also means upgrading my motherboard and ram. I'm considering getting a 1090T on black friday but I'm unsure because I know AMD has bulldozer coming out soon, just wondering what you guys think, should I wait and see what happens with bulldozer or should I go ahead and get the 1090T?

I would if you really really really want a new platform but IMHO I would wait for sandy bridge and Bulldozer to come out before getting a new set-up. then after that if both chip manufactures flop then you can get the 1090T without guilt. :D

could also be a price drop when the new architectures come out. probably nothing new in RAM coming out for a while so you could get that now and see what happens later.

You expect him to buy DDR3 RAM today, and then leave it idle until AM3+/Sandy Bridge come out?

AMD Bulldozer will also bear a premium price so it will end up costing more than the low cost of AM3 since a whole new socket AM3+ is coming with new motherboards

I'd suggest waiting because not only will there be Bulldozer and price drops just due to time but also we may start seeing PCIe 3.0 capable motherboards next year. Double the bandwidth of 2.0, better power management, and fully backwards compatible. Besides, your sig. rig doesn't look too bad that it needs to be upgraded now. Also, if you start waiting and saving for a Bulldozer rig now, then that premium for getting a new motherboard won't be quite so big.

It might not look like it needs the upgrade but my cpu can hardly handle some of the software I use and it often bottlenecks my gpu in games.

If you feel you really need to upgrade then do it. I still think Bulldozer will be a game changer, so perhaps just a $100 CPU, instead of a $300, while you wait.

It is your money and your choice ultimately.

This.

You can pick up a good X3 or X4 Phenom II for CHEAP these days.

I would agree if it was just the cpu but unfortunately I can't get a new one without getting a new motherboard and ram. When you have to upgrade that much, cheap isn't the word that comes mind, it's going to be pricey unless I get the cheapest junk around, which probably isn't going to amount to much of an upgrade.

It's because I'm in the position that I'm in now that I'm even considering waiting on Bulldozer, I know that if I buy now I will probably be in the same position I am now, that being that I will be very limited with my options because I jumped on the current platform a little too late like I did with AM2/AM2+.
