nice_shoes Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 I just tried to email a couple videos to a friend and it took several minutes to attempt to send them and finally a few minutes later I got a message saying the the remote server would not accept the email because it was too large. So....I looked at the help section in my email program, Thunderbird, and it suggested the following sites for transferring large files: Hightail or Box. I attempted to register for Box, and after I completed the online form it said that it was going to send me an email to verify the account..........and it never did send the email. So much for Box! So, next I tried Hightail, and I was able to register and login, but when I tried to send files, the button that normally says "Send Files" converts to say "Upgrade to Hightail Pro". Because I don't want to pay for Pro, I did not click and therefore the files were not sent. Seems like this is a deliberately sneaky way to operate! So I am now looking for some recommendations for other sites that will do the following: allow me to send large files when I email my friends be free Or, is there a better way to accomplish this.........perhaps just zipping the files and sending them that way? I wanted to avoid having the recipient take the trouble to unzip the file, if possible. All comments will be much appreciated. l1il Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 Using Onedrive with your Microsoft account would work well. You can access it by changing the e-mail tab to the Onedrive tab. After that you can upload and select which files to share with whom you want.
NCC10281982B Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 If I recall correctly, Gmail does not have a sive limit. Also you could use Google drive of a similar service (as mentioned by StefenHeif) to upload and share the file.
cchalogamer Posted October 6, 2014 Posted October 6, 2014 Yep OneDrive and Google Drive both work great and are free services.
Waco Posted October 6, 2014 Posted October 6, 2014 Dropbox might be worth a look too depending on the file size...
AkakmanH Posted October 6, 2014 Posted October 6, 2014 Winzip is not going to give you the file size you need as videos just don't compresss that much. You might look at http://www.rarlab.com/. Cost is about $20 but it sends many small files so email is not a problem.
El_Capitan Posted October 6, 2014 Posted October 6, 2014 (edited) Almost all large services provide some amount of Cloud Storage: 1. Micrsoft OneDrive 15GB Free 2. Google Drive 15GB Free 3. DropBox starts with 2GB Free, but refer friends, you can get up to 16GB Free 4. Amazon Cloud Services 5GB Free Then, there's something you can do locally, like creating a FTP server, which can easily be done. If it's pictures, you can get lots of free Cloud Storage through Flickr and a couple different places. If it's video sharing, use YouTube, and restrict access to those videos to just your friends. wevsspot Posted October 6, 2014 Posted October 6, 2014 If all else fails you can use https://www.wetransfer.com/ Our company uses this service (free) to help offload some of our FTP traffic. Maximum upload limit per file is 2Gb, but there isn't any cap on the number files or upload limit beyond that.
l1il Posted October 6, 2014 Posted October 6, 2014 To El Capitan, about FTP services... Take note some ISP are blocking the FTP Protocol (doesn't matter which port, they are looking in the header) so FTP is unusable on home servers. I used to do it a lot in 2004-2007, until I couldn't get nobody to connect. I was then with Cogeco, I haven't tried with Videotron (both are cable ISP). Years ago, it was working fine with Bell, but they have a terrible customer service, they can change your bill as often as they are pleased and whatnot. It was by DSL service. Maybe Wevs has the solution. Also, what about traditional mail and a USB memory stick? Best solution yet for mixed *content* and file size. IVIYTH0S Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 (edited) I remember getting 250GB of space over at MegaUpload and it looks like their new form gives 50GB free: https://mega.co.nz/ Might be worth a look! Just started uploading a 2.12GB file and it didn't complain (I think the big problem back than was the limits on how big a file could be uploaded at a time but I used to get around that by making an archive and splitting them into parts that were smaller than the limit) Edited October 7, 2014 by IVIYTH0S
