Hyper Threaded Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 Right now, I have the Kingston V300 as my main/OS drive, which I would like to upgrade to a faster/larger one in a few months. My main dilemma is over whether to go with the cheap favourite Samsung 840 EVO or Intel 730. I see a lot of great things about both. Is there a quantifiable reason to choose one over the other? Any reason to avoid either? Thanks for looking!
IVIYTH0S Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 Just get a cheaper one, honestly you won't see a substantial upgrade either way. Not like the inital jump from a platter drive
ccokeman Posted August 26, 2014 Posted August 26, 2014 Going from a 120GB to a larger 480GB does come with some performance increases but I/m not sure it would be enough to really justify the costs.
ir_cow Posted August 26, 2014 Posted August 26, 2014 If your gonna upgrade I would get the Crucial MX100. I just got a 512gb about 2 weeks ago for $200 on newegg. From what i've read the only thing that is better (in my eyes) is the Samsung 850 Pro with 3D Nands. Like the rest said, you won't see a major increase speed wise. IVIYTH0S Posted August 26, 2014 Posted August 26, 2014 Yeah, Crucials seem to be the value kings right now. I'd go for a 240-256GB of whatever the current models are or whoever else is pricing right. (thought I saw a PNY for sale the other day for like $89)
LuckyDeath Posted August 26, 2014 Posted August 26, 2014 Any recommendations with reliability being a major factor? I've had issues in the past with SSD's not being able to go into sleep mode, or just outright dying out of nowhere.

Other than a OCZ Vector drive going bad randomly I haven't had any problems yet. At this point they all have worked out the kinks I feel. Only time will tell how good they really are. ohldboy Posted August 26, 2014 Posted August 26, 2014 Intel, unless you find a super sale price, is expensive. Otherwise good. Samsung, if you need their "toolbox" is a reasonably very good deal with best reputation. Crucial, on sale, is what I purchased , though M500 drives. The MX100 are earning a very good reputation. My Vertex 2, Agility 3, KIngston V100 and SanDisk Extreme are all running perfect years later (the S.E. being the newest)
wevsspot Posted August 26, 2014 Posted August 26, 2014 Really really hard to argue the value proposition of the MX100 512Gb drive for $209 and some change. Great reliability, 550Mb/s Read - 500Mb/s write speeds. The 512Gb version is also coming with Acronis backup/imaging software according to buyers over at Newegg. Yeah, sadly the 256GB was $88 but the sale ended yesterday. I'd keep my eyes open for another sale to come along!

I'm using it in my laptop right now and it's amazing. I tempted to swap out my Intel 335 in my desktop with this. It's also only 480gb after formatting where as some SSD are really what they say. OCZ and Intel are some of them.
