Need advice for buying CPU Cooler

Hi Guys,

I have Phenom ll X4 965 @3.4 GHZ on Crosshair lll motherboard with CM HAF 922 cabinet. I haven't OCed the processor. The idle temperature is 51 degree Celsius and load temperature is around 59 degree Celsius, nearing the threshold of 62 C for phenom ll 965.

Due to this my game play for Counter Strike:Source gets sluggish resulting in huge lag and PC hangs quite a lot.

Kindly advice me which cooler to go for Noctua NH D14 or Corsair H70 ?

Also heavy dust conditions prevail near my locality, stock cooler cannot reduce the temp below 51 on idle hence advice needed. Posting snapshot of my CPU stats

Noctua if you don't mind a big heavy heatsink... Corsair (though I'd recommend the H60) if you want something that takes up less space (also very quiet, even compared to the Noctua).

ok, hold on

I am going to assume since you live in india you dont have an air conditioner running from your temps

the first thing we want to do is improve the case airflow

now you say you have a 922? this is a fine case. so there are two slots on the top for fans one in the front and one in the back

I think the stock top is a single 200mm one though, which is fine

you have them all running on high speed, correct? if not, that is your first problem

you might even want to angle your CPU heatsink fan upwards since you got that giant fan

after u get ur new heatsink on you can turn the case fans down until you get to temps you are happy with in regards to noise

I also would like to know what graphic card you have and the settings

dust is very very bad for computer heatsinks, you must keep it clean, this case should have a filter on the front?

but if you have to do weekly dusting inside, then dont be lazy and do weekly dusting.

a noctua is a great fan, but it is also very expensive.

also, the H70 wont move as much air over the chipset (this is just my opinion)

any good cooler for 50$ or less should be fine as well. coolermaster or thermatake etc.

so, just to recap

first we want to make sure your case is getting good airflow (not heating up inside from the GPU)

and second get a good fan, noctua is fine or coolermaster 212+ if available.

in your situation, a serious water cooling setup would be good. I rarely recommend that to people, but dont get an H70.

it really comes down to your budget

EDIT:

also, if you are using the stock AMD fan it should come pregreased

however, before buying a new heatsink you might try and clean it with some isopropyl alochol and reseat it with new thermal paste if you have some available to see if your temps are better

someitimes paste cakes and gets brittle and doesnt work as well as it should

keep in mind, if the ambient air (room temperature) is hot in your bedroom

no matter what you do the computer is going to run hot as well and you will have to make concessions by turning down your settings

I know here in texas its been 100 degrees all week and I have to keep watering my plants every other day

Which is more expensive??

I like the Noctua C14 better than the D14 personally, if you're ordering from an online site could you provide a link??

Honestly a Coolermaster 212+ would be adequate to give a 965 to a decent overclock. And internationally that seems to be the best cooler for the money on average

given the 51c idle I have to ask. What is you inlet or ambient temperature and what kind of fan do you have on there now? If its over 85f then I would definatly go for something like a hyper212 or better. The options above that are a maglahelm, h60 or a d14 that will perform better. There is the option of going full out watercooling which my be the best option depending on what the temperature in your home is normally.

Let us know the inlet temp and we can recommend further from there.

As its summer ending here the room/ambient temperature is between 35 to 40 degree Celsius. Currently I am having Stock fan/cooler that came with Phenom ll 965. Also one more thing I want to ask is If I were to put 1 extra fan in my cabinet what could be the better combination ? 2 inlet 2 exhaust/ 1 inlet 3 exhaust. Out of 4 fans 2 are of 200 mm and rest 2 are 120 mm.

For that kind of temperature 90-104f.... In that sort of case I would do cabinet side intake, front intake, rear exhaust and top exhaust if it sits on a table. If you want you can also attempt side exhaust to see what works better If you are in a confined corner I would use that as an exhaust though. My modded Dragon needs extra exhaust but the HAF922 is a totally different case so it will need to be tested to see what works the best for it. :D

Good luck and I would go ahead and get the Hyper 212+ and see what it can do in that kind of ambient temps. It will be an improvement over the Stock HSF that is for sure.

One peculiar thing I just noticed. While deleting unwanted files and folders on my USB HDD the temperature suddenly rose from 51 degree Celsius to 63 degree Celsius as I deleted a folder with a few thousand files. No other application was running at that time. Post deletion it took 5 min for the temp to come back to 50 C.Is there something seriously wrong ?

Yeah, your system is way to hot!

You need some more case fans.
