Boinker Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 There is a coworker of mine here that has a 20 pound dead blow hammer. Took on hit on the back side and took it aprat to see the carnage. He hit that thing so hard that the platters shattered from the shear impact.......... Stress releaved... 50 dollars bragging rights obtained... priceless. OwinC Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 When I worked for Nucor Steel. I threw the drives into the furnace. Instant meltdown at 3200 degrees .
IVIYTH0S Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 I usually take the platters out. They make great coasters. Yeah I had like 20 laying around at one time but eventually gave them to a scrap metal guy. I usually get a nailpuller side of a hammer and wail on the platters with that until they're all dented up
tazwegion Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 When I worked for Nucor Steel. I threw the drives into the furnace. Instant meltdown at 3200 degrees . The imagery that inspires is somewhat reminiscent of the final scenes of Terminator 1... kudos to you! So bad for the environment. I guess your porn collection is safe! Oh that was only a little flame, when I destroyed an old PC chips mainboard with fire it was a much more impressive result
Andrewr05 Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 Already mentioned but shooting them is *very* fun and effective. I've been meaning to bring some of my old junk to my property and shoot it.
bobby898 Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 If the hard drive is old enough (older the better), i have to take the magnets out of them, they have awesome strenght, good fun to mess around with. Then destroy!!!
sYstEmATiC Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 I like to take the cover off, bend the platters just ever so slightly. Put the drive back together, and place in a friend or family members computer, only plugging in the power connector. Dont forget to unplug the main hard drive, so it doesnt boot. Have them power up the machine and watch their reaction to the hideous screetching coming from inside their tower. Its better when they are computer illiterate. Tell them they just lost all their data for good, and that they need a new hard drive. The reaction is normally priceless. After 10-15 minutes, let them in on the joke. LOL

TCcomputers29 Posted June 5, 2011 Posted June 5, 2011 aren't they real thin so they shatter when you put a nice cool beverage on it? they are quite thick. i've opened 2 HDD's before.
sYstEmATiC Posted June 5, 2011 Posted June 5, 2011 I think I might try this with a recently acquited IDE drive Its pretty funny. If you bend them too much, the drive wont spin up. If you do it just right, It makes a substantially loud metal on metal screech. Ever heard what it sounds like when all the braking material has worn off of a cars brake pads, and its down to the rivets and back plate? VERY similar. Try it out to make sure you did it right before putting it back together. LOL.
