580 or 5970?

My friend wants a new video card and wasn't to sure what one to pick. I told him the best ones for gaming out right now are the 580 and the 5970. I don't know much about the 580 other then just a few reviews and I have a 5970 so he knows what that is like. He just wanted to get some other people to help point him in the right way. He said money isn't really a big deal just don't wanna spend over $800.

Note: he has only one PCI-E 2.0 port. Not SLI or Xfire for that guy. =P

Tell him to wait. Black Friday is in 2 weeks. Prices will drop. They Cayman cards will be out around that week, so he might want to choose between the GTX 580 or the HD 6970.

:withstupid:

5970 is still stronger though and cheaper to buy.

How much faster you think the 6990 (whatever the duel gpu one is) is going to be then the 5970? About same as the 4870 x2 jumping to 5970?

I'm hoping so, though without out concrete multi-reviews, none can say.

The Caymen cards have been rumored to have been delayed.

Well I guess this is over with. My friend just got a XFX Black Edition 5970 2GB with Arctic Cooling Accelero XTREME 5970 VGA Cooler. Total with next day was 500 even. Was this a good deal for him or could you find it cheap some where.

The 6990 might not even be dual 6970's , they might be dual 6950's downclocked or two 6870's because of power requirements . If it was dual 6970's then you would need 500 watts for the gpu alone. All in all, his 5970 was a good deal . Its a great card.

but the 580 is still the best multi-GPU setup in SLI, with one 5970 ur pretty much stuck right there, another 5970 would downscale in CF, but one on one, 1 580 vs 1 5970 the 5970 wins hands down, no doubt in my mind, but ur stuck with one 5970, while the 580 can go up to 3. 5970 is still king tho :P

The guy only has one PCIE slot. No Xfire or SLI for him anyway.
