i7 920 Bad!

Recommended Posts

I have i7 920 CPU, but I can't understand when I for example try to extract 3-4 zipped files with a size of around 7-16gb the pc laggs and gets slow. As I have 4 cores and this should be no problem, help? Might be my program? I used Winzip.

It's your hard drive, not your CPU or memory. Open up task manager and click on your performance tab, you won't see all your CPU or Memory resources at 100%, otherwise you do have an issue with your CPU. Extracting 7-16GB's, your single WD Caviar Black's throughput is limited and doesn't have enough bandwidth to perform other functions as well because it's already working at full load to extract all that porn, I mean data... :P

I think winzip is a single threaded application, you should try winrar 64 bits or 7zip.

When I copy a 7-16gb file over to my HDD external, should my internet and eveything else I do on my computer get slowed down?

I wouldn't think so, as the output to usb should be well under the max speed of your main drive

There will be lag even though the usb is much slower than the main drive. What slows it down so much is the fact that the hard drive has to keep seeking (the slowest part) back and forth between the data going to the external and the data being used by the OS and web browser. All that jumping back and forth creates the lag.

Yeah but not intense lag, unless his main drive was an older drive.

wait are you trying to unzip 3 files 7-16gb each or do you have 3 files that equals 7-16gb in a sequence (file01, file02, file03, etc)? usually the sequence is for 7zip or rar files. Try to use winrar first than report back but if you are unzipping a 7gb file of course its gonna bog down the computer since the file bigger than all your ram.

I have like 40 small rar files, that I extract into a 7-16gb file. And I'm trying to do this process x3

Unless you're running a SSD and around 12GB of ram, unzipping a 7GB rar file is going to lag, no matter what processor you have.

Upgrading to a multi-threaded application such as 7zip would help though.

In terms of "real world" applications, the SSD shines extremely well for this! My 80GB Intel x 2 SSD RAID 0 setup using Winrar takes seconds to unzip a 1080p movie, which are usually around +/- 8GB :D If I remember correctly the last 1080p movie took less than 30 seconds to unzip and transfer on my system :P
