Is Pc Gaming dying?

look, no offense, but how many times do i have to explain that i know what onlive is?

really this is the core of the issue, onlive is not the same as current PC gaming, and to call it so makes the question "is PC gaming dying" totally redundant. with onlive we lose the ability to mod games, we lose player hosted servers, we no longer own the hardware that runs our games and cannot customise or improve it. yes the end result is similar but do you really think that's what PC gaming is? just playing games?

So your saying that pc gaming is at threat to dieing (when you own onlive statements say its not) by now addin the fact that its gonna change and be different from how it is today?

So if it changes or evolves then it is dead?

So our argument now is PC gaming is gonna change in the future and by that we conclude its gonna die??????

I think this is now getting insane.

How bout this, you proved it. PC gaming is gonna die! I dont see the point in explaining how you proved yourself wrong again, your not making any since.

PC gaming, console gaming, all gaming will evolve. Thats non-debatable. That doesnt make it dieing

OK seems like you have a fair grasp of this, but if onlive is successful then it will absolutely take market share away from traditional PC gaming, and drop GPU sales. why should ATI continue to make desktop GPUs when something purpose built for onlive (like xenos) would be far more efficient?

Why should ATI or nVidia continue to make desktop GPUs? Because PC gaming isn't the only reason to have them.

There is a lot of money in supercomputing. Look at some of the benchmarks. Current gen Nvidia cards spank CPUs.

in a word, yes. if you're not running a game on the PC you're using, it's not PC gaming to me. it's game streaming, or cloud gaming or whatever you'd like to call it. i've already said this, but i'll say it again, PC gaming is about more than just playing games on the PC. if you want to call onlive PC gaming then so be it, but you might as well call console gaming PC gaming too, because it makes about as much sense to me.

but why bother to make geforce cards and drivers, when those other applications are already covered by tesla and quadro?

we already know that fermi is going to be focussed toward GPGPU computing, so as i already said, whats to stop nvidia from making their products even more specialised for and efficient at these tasks?

on top of this, if onlive takes off then why would anyone want to release games on PC anyway? the "no piracy" part of onlive only works if the game doesn't get a PC release.

PC gaming wont to die untill AMD/ATI and Nvidia die, since PC gamers are such a huge market for both company's ;) its true that console gaming is getting ever more popular but have you looked at the PC games list for 2010? i think you will be Astounded at how many GOOD games there are coming out, infact i hear that people are calling january 2010 the 'Second Christmas'

I can definately see me paying out about ~

I do think PC gaming is dying.

But, after saying that, I ask myself, what is a PC? More and more, consoles are becoming more like PC's. For example, even the Wii has web browsing capabilities. Consoles are able to play DVD's and high def movies, have the ability to store massive amounts of data, etc. Taking the entire history of console gaming into perspective, it's only recently that console gamers have been able to play together online, even set up online communities, something PC has had for much longer.

In essence... how long is it before consoles become value PC's, and games are released for one platform?

I personally think that the migration from PC to console, and PC gaming to console gaming is like a convection current.

You see, as consoles become more popular, game developers start to favour the console. The game developers then sink down (and I don't mean this in a bad, derogatory way) to focus on their console releases, which just leaves room for indie/lesser known developers who may choose to specialise on PC to rise up and release a smasher of a game for PC, and maybe even multi-platform.

if you ask me, there will always be someone to take the place of a developer when one platform is abandoned. If Blizzard decided to hang up PC gaming, you know for certain that there would be a good few companies fighting for the top spot on PC gaming.

I guess you have to ask what type of a gamer you are. There is alot of people out there that won't touch consoles. I am one of them I think they look like crap and I don't have any enjoyment on them. However that could be from me being spoiled with cool gear that some people don't get to play with so they never know the difference. But being a die hard gamer I would be ticked right off if PC titles were stopped completely. As I said before PC gaming titles are in the billions as are console titles, but there is not a company out there that would want to give those numbers up.

With PC's becoming more powerful games are becoming more realistic and I am sorry consoles are aways a way from being anywhere near the same.

^ +1

when i grew up console games where becoming incredible mainstream, it was exciting. it kinda got to a point where its "new system only" for big realtime advances in everything from gameplay to graphics.

thats what the feeling of pc gaming is. the better i can do with my hardware or new hardware the better i can run my games..

its like a personal challenge to strive to get a better fps, picture quality.

fun times i haven't felt for consoles in probally 10 years.

too many big-time let-downs from consoles btw on the old school "third party devices",

like a rumble pack.. i thought it was the coolest idea till i got one and strapped on a hard plastic backpack with a sad 6inch speaker in it. even as a child i was dissapointed.

go PC gaming!

we can all see how many PC titles are being limited by their console counterparts at the moment, with only a few companies really willing to try and make something really outstanding for the PC. console (hardware) releases are already setting the pace of progress to some degree, but they will always be technically obsolete by the time they hit the market and so can't really touch PC in the "cutting edge" department.

a platform like onlive however, with the capability to be continually updated could be a good thing for game development. chances are that even compared to PC onlive could become the most frequently updated platform.

i get mine out every so often to see if it still sucks. it always does.
