PS3 or a vid card

Hey guys.. don't know where this topic will fit so I post it here.

So basically I am planning on buying something for my brother on his b'day (end of April) and I am wondering what to get.

He is quite an avid gamer but right now he is using a crappy XFX 7900.. I feel sorry for the dude... I am wondering whether I should get him a vid card or a PS3..

He is playing at 1680-res but if he has a better card he will play in the 40" LCD tv... so I am looking for something that will do 1920-res.

I have a GTX260, so I wan thinking if I buy him another 260, maybe later(in a year?) I can give him my card so he can SLI... or get a 4870 because they are cheap and (slightly?) better than 260 at high resolutions.

But it keeps nagging me that I should get a PS3.. because his build isn't that good and I don't know if the vid card alone can support the graphics... but if I get a PS3, I don't have to bother about any of it... and importantly it will hold on for number of years to come..

What keeps me swinging both ways is the fact that I think PS3 games will have some pieces missing from its PC version.. is it true? I've heard ppl often say that the PC versions are always better than the console version...

What are you guys take on this..?

Thank you.

Its a little out of my budget man... also like I said, he has a E6XXX series I think.. I dont think will become a bottleneck.. so he will need to upgrade that as well....

Meh, I got a PS3, not 1 game laggs, visuals are awesome for games like Uncharted.

Ported games are always crap unless the dev spends time on it.

It's a home-supercomputer.

8-Core IBM CPU @ 3.2Ghz

Equivalent to 7800GTX (Dev can push cards to limit, so no need for a more powerful gfx card)

256MB XDR RAM

They make games for the PS3? That must be a new development. I hadn't heard :P

As for console vs. video card, it's a pretty arbitrary decision. Should I have ham or beef for lunch? Should I ride a bike or wear a vest? If your goal is to get him playing games, a console would be the easiest choice, but it depends on what he wants. They're different markets and different gaming styles, so there's no directly right answer.

I will ask, though. Have you considered an Xbox 360? You can't be the game selection and you can get the 60GB with HDMI for super cheap.

I own a PS3 and if you were to get a console I'd also suggest the 360 only because every developer goes to bed with it and the PS3 get's the sloppy seconds of the game ports.

I pretty much use my PS3 to fold and watch blurays, that's it. I want to make it a media center soon. It's not a bad system in any way but I just like PC gaming better and I can't justify paying 60 dollars for a game where the developer wont take the necessary amount of time to properly release a game for each console it's available for.

(It also makes me sick where I'm playing Devli May Cry 4 on my PC and it says to press B to go back and A to accept. I didn't buy an Xbox game, I bought a PC game! It wouldn't be that hard to change that ya know?)

Also if you get a video card get him either a 4870 1GB or Core 216 260 since they will be more than enough for a while, my 260 handles everything just fine at 1920x1200 so it should be even easier at 1920x1080.

the most video card you should get him would be a 4850x2 which beats 280s/285s and is cheaper.

umm not to start a console war but between me and all my friends we have gone thru 15 360s in the last 2 years, they just about break once a year. ps3 not so much, only thing i'v ever heard was the bluray laser crapping out from the launch consoles.

so either grab a ps3 or a cheaper video card and upgrade him again in the year.

I think that landscape has changed considerably in the past year or so. You don't see anywhere near the reports of RRoDs from new units.

If we were talking about release day 360s, I'd agree wholeheartedly and tell you to run away screaming. But units sitting on the shelf today? I've got no worries. I purposely waited until this last holiday season to even consider a 360 for just that reason. I started out shopping for a PS3, in all honesty. But after taking a fair look at the game offerings and price points for both, I really couldn't justify the PS3. To each their own though. If you think you'll use the BluRay player, it's worth it for the PS3. Personally, I don't see myself buying a single BR title until media reaches the price point that DVDs are at today.

i just had a 360 9-1-07 crap out of me not to long ago, you may be safe with something made after 4-1-08 (when they started to switch to 65nm)

edit: when buying a 360 always check the born date and make sure the amp is 12.1A or PSU output 150watt.

I wouldn't waste my money on a PS3. Each game is about $60 while computer games are $50 and under. Also, on a computer you can play with much more players than on a PS3(CoD4, Console=12 players maximum, Computer=64 players maximum). Just get him a GTX280 if he is going to game on that 40" TV/
