Should I Game In Vista Or Stick With Xp

Hi,

I haven't used Vista yet but I am building a new rig hopefully in less than two weeks, and I am wondering should I go with Vista or XP?

This will only be used for games as I will using a Ubuntu boot for all my other daily requirements.

So what would you guys recommend? I dont want to install Vista but does it give better performance with DX10 than with DX9?

Doesnt it degrade the FPS?

Please give me your ideas.

Cheers.

Let me add to his reason... I have 4gb of ram and use vista 64-bit because xp 64 sucks balls..... Yeah that sums it up...

Xp64 its kinda like M$' illegitimate child for lack of a better word. Support for devices is fairly limited. If you don't need 4gb of ram then stick with xp 32bit but if you need 4gb then vista 64bit.

Vista has improved much, since its launch. The FPS difference is like 1-3 fps or none now at Dx 9. If you throw on Dx 10, it probably will drop anyways. I haven't been on Vista since launch. I'll reinstall it with the new parts I got this week later.

Vista is slower then XP running just about everything. The question is will you notice the difference and that will depend on your system. If you have fast enough hardware there will be no noticeable difference from a user's perspective.

I stepped over from a 2GB RAM WinXP system to a system with 4GB and Vista 64bit and I can't really notice any difference in performance. So I think you'll be safe with 4GB and a good processor and GPU (for games and aeroglass).

If you're an uber nerd and don't care about a pretty desktop... disable the themes service in Vista. Eats resources like a pig.

I have a dual boot XP / Vista system that is 100% tweaked for gaming, and the differences are to all intents and purposes zero. I would imagine if you leave all basic services running and don't customize your install, then you may see a (negative) performance difference in Vista. Remember you can't run DX10 effects on XP tho. Although performance drops a fair bit, DX10 sure does look purty.

Yeeee-haw!!

if you have more than 4gb of ram use xp64 elsewise windows xp is a lot faster and better than vista. along with if you don't have 4gb of ram you sure don't have a video card that can even use DX10. on that note i would wait in till dx11 beacuse 10 doesn't had anything but Native HDR.

I don't care about Aero. I use Compiz for daily activities which is miles apart from Aero IMHO.

I will disable those services.

So Vista 64-bit is a version to go if I am only using it for gaming?

My rig will be Asus P6T+Corei7 920+Black edition GTX 260+ 4GB DDR3.

I guess I will be able to handle Vista <_<

It would make sense to go Vista for a new computer, usually if you have an old computer with XP, then I see no point in upgrading. (unless you want 4Gb but don't want to go with Xp64)

I still wonder why this Xp vs Vista debate still lives though
