3 New Builds

ok im building 3 new systems 2 are for family members and dont need anything overly extreme but the other is for me (a hardcore gamer).

the 2 other comps will be using rampage extreme mobo's/ x48 chipsets

how ever my comp is more complicated being as i may want to use sli, i heard somewere that you can use sli without nvidia's chipsets; but i have no idea how one would do so.

i i have toyed with the idea of using a striker II extreme but i have been reading that there are major issuies with the board and n790i.

Q.1: can i use a crossfire board for sli some how? and if so... how?

Q.2: has the striker II extreme been fixed? can it run stable non_oced?

Q.3: can any one recommend some good boards for me, im still pretty new at this

1. The Rampage Extreme is exactly what it says: extreme, so why would u want to use 2 of them in computers that u don't want to be extreme?

2. Intel chipset = Crossfire, nVidia Chipset= SLI, there is no way to use SLI on Crossfire mobo or vice versa. The only intel chipset that supports SLI & crossfire is the x58 that is due to come out before christmas.

3. For the two family PCs a P35 mobo would probably enough depending on what the PCs would be used for.

:withstupid:

It would be idiotic to use a Rampage Extreme motherboard for an average joe pc.

As for the OP:

What resolution do you play on? Do you have a monitor? What are your planned specs? Do you want to overclock (slight overclock or a heavy overclock, yet stable?)

Isn't the Striker II Extreme a DDR3 Board? Most people here suggest going DDR2, at least until you have to change. (i7)

I can recommend my board, ASUS P5N72-T Deluxe It works great and OC's like a champ. plus the three-way SLI gives lots of room to improve gaming performance. I know there aren't very good reviews on newegg, but i'm pretty sure most of them can be explained by other components going bad, and the blame just falling on the mobo. i can personally vouch that this board is awesome, and would be great for your personal build.

also, i'd agree with what the other posters said before me

yay x58 here i wait lol

well the main reason i was going for a rampage xtreme is because of the rave reviews i have seen it and i like too use the best parts i can, i'll check out a few p35s thanks.

i play on a 19" syncmaster @1440X900 but im getting a second samsung t240hd 24" @ 1920 x 1200.

planed specs

gpu: geforce 280 (X2 maybe)

cpu: Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650 Yorkfield 3.0GHz

psu: i was thinking about a ultra 1600 but thats a bit much so i think im going with a ocz elite-stream 1200 or 1000w

ram: DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)

i may overclock a little bit but i want a stable system

planed specs for other two:

XFX PVT88GYDF4 GeForce 8800GTS

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz

OCZ Platinum 4GB (2 x 2GB)

Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS 640GB

SAMSUNG ToC T190 Black 19"

SAMSUNG 22X DVD

Processor is overkill. Just get yourself a 9550, drop down to DDR2, drop the idea of SLI, and get yourself a Corsair 750w. You won't see a difference, but your wallet will.

this may be a noob question but

what makes ddr2 better than ddr3?

not a noob question at all, in fact DDR3 is better than DDR2 performance wise, the only thing is that you are paying quite a bit more for DDR3 than 2 for a very small performance increase. The thing is, the RAM can only move so much info/sec with a fixed CPU frequency, that faster RAM will not give enough performace increase to justify the higher price.

hope that makes sense, i'm not the most knowledgeable person on the subject but the basic idea is that DDR2 has a much better price:performace ratio than DDR3.
