Puck Posted May 21, 2008 Posted May 21, 2008 eh thats what i figured but i gotta wait for my cpu anyway. What about fans anyone have any suggestions? I love my delta 3 blade "High Speed" fan, but some things to look out for.. -It needs a fan controller like all high performance fans since it can get annoying at full blast -It may not clear your RAM/components since it is 38mm thick - a lot thicker then the standard 120mm fans -It draws almost an amp so you cannot run it off you mobo header - just the signal wire to mobo for RPM monitoring and a molex for 12v/GND -It is fairly expensive at 17 bucks There are a ton of mainstream fans tailored for different noise levels and CFMs if you do not want or need something that extreme. Kash Posted May 21, 2008 Posted May 21, 2008 Black is the natural color of aluminum, so this means the heatsink is clearly anodized black (obviously conventional paint would be just plain stupid). Wouldn't that have some sort of affect on its cooling ability? I'm thinking it's negligible, but it might be something to consider when aiming for getting the best performance out of an air cooler. Kash Posted May 21, 2008 Posted May 21, 2008 So it's nickel coated. Nickel isn't naturally black either. So that means not only does the heat have to get past whatever it is that's giving the heatsink its black color, but also a layer of nickel before it gets to the copper core. I guess I'll have to wait for performance numbers to find out whether the black color has any affect on the cooling ability.
Kash Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Talked to the Thermalright guys today. Turns out they're using some sort of nickel hybrid alloy to get the metal to be that color. There was also a copper colored model on hand (no, it wasn't copper, it was just copper colored as it weighed the same and the guy specifically mentioned that it wasn't copper) to show that different colors can be achieved by using alloys. So there goes any reservations we may have had regarding how they got the thing to be black.
road-runner Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 How about the copper version? Never mind reading FTW....
wevsspot Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Black is the natural color of aluminum ? Pure aluminum metal is silver color with kind of a white tint. Additional alloys added to the aluminum to refine it's chemical properties and grain structure can change the color from anywhere to a darker grey to a really bright silver. I've been in the aluminum casting industry (automotive) for almost 25 years and I've never seen black aluminum (i.e. without liquid or power coat paint, anodization or plating of some sorts). wevsspot Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 After re-reading all of his posts I think Kash meant to say that "black isn't the natural color of aluminum".
