Gustavss14 Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 (edited) Hello. Should i go for PCI-E 2.0 or 3.0? Becuse i can get the PCIE 2.0 cheap. Looks like the 3.0 doesn't make a difference http://www.techpowerup.com/157253/PCI-Express-3.0-Has-Zero-Performance-Incentive-for-Radeon-HD-7970-Tests.html But maybe a driver will fix this? http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1155/Maximus_IV_GENEZ/ Edited December 27, 2011 by Gustavss14

But you mentioned the 2.0 is cheaper - how much cheaper are we talking here? Edited December 27, 2011 by DarkScorpion
LuckyDeath Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 For what purpose? Graphics cards?
Black64 Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 There is almost no difference, just get the 2.

PremiumAcc Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 As far as I know PCI-E cards have yet to fully realize PCI-E 2.0. IMO, it doesn't really matter if you get a board with PCI-E 2.0 or with PCI-E 3.0 considering that by the time cards that can truly use PCI-E 3.0, better mobos will be out in the market. However, if I could get a board at the same price, then I would go for the 3.0.
PremiumAcc Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Almost half price.. Definitely go with the 2.0 board.
DarkScorpion Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Almost half price.. Go with the 2.0 then. pcie 2.0 still hasn't been fully saturated, no point in doubling the cost for 3.0.
Tjj226_Angel Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 2.0. If pci 3.0 had something like a x32 slot, it would be a different story.
Drdeath Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 2.0. If pci 3.0 had something like a x32 slot, it would be a different story. thats funny, the total bandwith is not used in 16x.
d6bmg Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 PCI-E 2.0 will be enough for next 1 year at least.
Stonerboy779 Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 Depends what cards you use because there is the very real possibility of a 7990 or 690 being able to saturate a 16x pci-e 2.0 slot (or equivalently a 8x pci-e 3.0 slot). Normal single gpu cards will be fine in 8x and 16x pci-e 2.0 slots for some time. You may also find a board with support for cf/sli 8x 3.0 cheaper than the effective equivalent 16x 2.0 board. Same bandwidth (with an ivy processor, when they arrive).
