TCcomputers29 Posted June 4, 2011 Posted June 4, 2011 hey guys i was just wondering if i could change my laptop cpu. See i have a v120 2.2Ghz single core (it's alright can play battlefield 2 on medium) and i want to change it to a athlon 2 core or phenom 2 core (both have the sam TDP as v120 - 25w, now this is possible right? and will it be harder than replacing a desktop CPU? i am going to replace the thermal paste on the laptops cpu when i get the coolermaster hyper 212+ (for my desktop ) so the real question is this all possible and how would i do it? can someone who has changed a laptop cpu reply but anyone can reply thanks TCcomputers29
Locutus Posted June 4, 2011 Posted June 4, 2011 Have you ever replaced anything in a laptop? Does that specific Mobo support the new CPUs? (BIOS wise)
LETTERSTOTHEDEV Posted June 4, 2011 Posted June 4, 2011 Your going to have to search around for what your notebooks motherboard was designed to accommodate, typically there bios cant be changed and it's set up for a select few upgrade options. Check to see what your manufacturer provides for upgrades and start from there. My dell could only take a cpu with a 200Mhz bump which was totally pointless for the price. IVIYTH0S Posted June 4, 2011 Posted June 4, 2011 Are they the same socket, what is the highest CPU offered for your model machine? That'd be the highest you can go.

El_Capitan Posted June 4, 2011 Posted June 4, 2011 Just do your research, if the CPU is compatible with your motherboard, you won't have a problem. It's pretty easy, same thing as a CPU in a desktop, but the laptop is a little more difficult to take apart.

El_Capitan Posted June 4, 2011 Posted June 4, 2011 The BIOS will restrict you in what way? I've never had the BIOS restrict me with any CPU upgrade in a laptop.
medbor Posted June 4, 2011 Posted June 4, 2011 if you already have it, just test it, but i don't think its worth the money to gamble. look what chipset you have and look for which processors are coupled with it in other models. it will probably work though i would not risk it if i didn't have it already. Side note: I have a compac mini 700 which according to the manual and specifications cant hanle 2gb ram sticks, but my local store said we could try it and that i didn't have to buy it if it didn't work. Ask a nice store person to do the same (although you will probably have to take it apart yourself)
