GTX 580 vs. upcoming 6970?

Once again Nvidia delivers with the world's fastest single GPU graphics card, and ATI hopes to come right back and challenge the 580 with its new 6970. Im super siked about the 6970, been an ATI guy for a long time, but with Nvidia's 580 i am truly impressed and realized that a good graphics card is a good graphics card, despite it's chipset manufacturer, rather it be nvidia or ATI, if it performs great then thats all that matters to me. The 6970 isnt out yet but alot of people are saying its gunna be a great matchup for the GTX 580, and as much as id like to believe it would be, i still think the 580 will own the 6970 (as much as it aches me to say) lol. So, before this thread turns into a novel, do you think the new upcoming 6970 will surpass the GTX 580, or will the 580 still reign supreme?

*OFF TOPIC*- Do you think the price of the GTX 580 will drop at all with the release of the 6970? On newegg the superclocked 580 is $570, while on compusa its $530, huge difference......but still, do you think the price will drop anytime soon? Hoping to upgrade to two GTX 580s for SLI in about 5 months......have 2x 5870s in CF right now, awesome cards, they rape games, but times are changing :-P

Idk I hope it does beat it to really crank up the competition. Statistics will tell us it will fall marginally short on performance, be marginally cheaper, and more efficient....I just hope that statistics are wrong this time. I want the video card world turned upside down....

and it better happen since they were delayed since the 580 came out (I assume due to further performance enhancing since the initial cards would not have been enough to rival the 580)

I can offer 1 guarantee:

The AMD card will run cooler and use less power ;) while producing similiar performance! Sounds like a winner to me! After the huge success of the 460, I just don't understand how Nvidia can't get on par with AMD on efficiency!

im just worried about the crossfire scaling and how much better its improved, if at all, from the 5xxx series........

are you serious?? haven't you seen how the 6870CF can beat a 5870CF setup?? It's magical scaling, for we all know that single 6870s are as strong as 470s (aka weaker than single 5870s)

well, im not too informed with the 6xxx series that much yet, so if the scaling has improved then thank god, because thats one of the reasons i considered switching to nvidia, becuase everywhere and every person ranted and raved about how awesome SLI is......now how about the drivers, do you see ATIs drivers improving? Cause nvidia has the +1 when it comes to drivers.....catalyst is inconsistent at times.

Idk, I heard some bad news with some of the nvidia drivers that'd cause their cards to melt down  , I don't think ATI ever had that problem.

ATI has been cranking out ALOT of hotfixs lately in tuning the 6 series and I also saw mention of improved crossfire profiles for a couple of new games too

Yeah , it was this driver

At least NV puts out a good driver package more often with multi GPU profiles that work !

Melt down... :yucky:

You know I love SLI but that just that driver made me lol at all the people who think that nvidia drivers never have problems of their own.

ATI's drivers suck pretty much all the time. Your losing IVI!!! :P

I would say the 6970 will be little behind because it always takes ATI a long time to fix all issues, whereas Nvidia now has around a month or so to fix any issues with the GTX 580.(And then they get another 2-3 months until ATI fixes their issues ;))

And I haven't noticed anything since the 9.12 or something drivers, ahh my HD 4870 is getting old and nearing its end after almost 2 years :D

Is your 4870 a 1GB or 512MB?

What do ya mean you havent noticed anything since 9.12?

Have you been seeing how AMD has been releasing hotfixs to help with CF improvements and 6800 optimization? I guess thats not as cool as waiting a month for that stuff to come out instead of hot off the press though
