But seriously,i really honestly think consoles are better for gaming. The market is geared towards consoles so thats where most money is made for developers. The Xbox 360 has much better games on it than you can get for pc atm.Sure the gfx aint true 1080p,but can you really see the difference?

Heres why i favour 360 atm:

Fight night

Progect Gotham Racing

Ninja Gaiden

Halo 3

Gears of war 2

Guitar hero/rock band

Tekken

And countless others.Plus EVERY game has acheivements.

And before everyone gets on my back,i know pc has better gfx and controls, but i find it really pathetic that you have to upgrade your gfx even though your just playing console ports.Id rather just pay 2 for

yes there may be more games for consoles in a whole, but generally the different consoles have different games, so if you want to play all the good games for the consoles which are generally sold to only one console like halo, or metal gear solid, and mario games, youd have to buy all three consoles, which would= up to one super computer, and as a pc gamer you still have tons of games, to play, also pc games are usually 10-20 dollars cheaper.

on the console side, im surprised no one has mentioned it yet, you can RENT GAMES!! cant do that on pc, you buy your game, you love it or hate it and are stuck with it

MOBILE GAMING, now a days you can get a laptop which puts alot of common users desktops to shame, you can take your games with you, so if you travel alot on business or what have you, even to college then back home, you dont have to lug a console and a tv or a pc and a monitor you can get a 17 inch laptop that will replace pretty much everything a desktop could have done for you. and it will most likley play all your games without a hitch

If you only game on PC then you still won't have Mario or metal gear. The PS3 also supports a keyboard and mouse, sadly the only game that i know of that uses this feature is UT3. I blame developers.

Your point about the laptop is valid but it would still be a single player experience. Even though consoles have increased in size this generation i would still say they are far more portable then the standard desktop, Of course you can build a nice compact rig using cases from shuttle and the like.

Edit: I would give +1 for consoles in portability.

how does the laptop have to be single player, i live in a little hick town in northern kentucky and i could probly find 10 wifi spots within a mile of me, with a pc you can have emulators, and play different games from the older consoles like mario, even though my argument was honestly for the wii mario, im unaware if anyone has been good enough to design a xbox 360/ps3 emulator though yet, if tis even possible. with a console being portable youd still have to take a TV with you so that cannot count as portable....

I was thinking of portable as in bring to a friends house and play. Not PSP or DS portability, That is a whole different thing.

PC

Powerful

Multitasking

Porn

Upgradeable

You can make CD's and DVD

Graphics are way better

Overclocking

Consoles

Not as powerful

Can do as many tasks as a PC

Not upgradable

Can't make Discs

Can't overclock

My vote is for a PC, personally I can't stand consoles.

Tonight, I was debating with my father which one out of the two is best. All of a sudden, the phone rings. Who's that? My uncle. So he also gets into the debate over the phone. Now I thought we could have that debate here at OverclockersClub, in an organized manner obviously. Although we are a computer-focused community, I know a good chunk of you guys play on consoles.

So the rules are simple. I will be the debate master. I will compile the valid arguments submitted by the folks in this thread and adjust the score according to them. Now obviously as in a real debate you have the right to replicate to an argument and try destroy it. Most importantly, when you submit an argument, you have to explain it!!! Also... no flaming plz ;) The forum rules still apply. :)

When you want to reply to an argument, please quote it. Oh and one last thing: when we talk about consoles, at least two of the three current ones must have the discussed feature for it to be eligible.

Consoles - 4 : 3 - PC

Arguments in favor of PC:

  1. PCs are great for porn.
  2. More types of controllers.
  3. The DIY satisfaction.

Arguments in favor of consoles:

  1. They just work.
  2. They are cheaper.
  3. Hot seat.
  4. More games.

Sorry, but there are way more PC games than console games, so #4 in the console list should be in the PC list.

Also:

PC:

- better graphics. At max settings it's no contest with every multi-platform game. Even at medium settings, many PC games still look better than their console counterparts due to higher textures, better lighting, etc.

- games are at least $10 cheaper...and then you have digital download services like Steam that increase that differential further.

- PCs allow you to do more than just game, and thus a direct cost analysis is inappropriate. One shouldn't consider the full cost of their PC as the cost of PC gaming, but rather the cost to make the PC they'd have anyway into one that could game, which is often the same price or CHEAPER than consoles at time of launch.

- mod community. the end.

- superior control schemes in 75% of games (100% if you consider that one can always use a gamepad if they so desire)

- multi-monitor gaming

- 3D gaming (eventually coming to PS3 though)

- MMOs. Consoles do not have the technology to support true persistent-world MMOs.

- free gaming. Sites like kongregate and newgrounds provide free flash games that provide unlimited hours of fun. Then you have more "fuller" games like Battlefield Heroes, Quake Live, League of Legends and various free MMOs.

- home of OCC (+10 pts right there, right?)

PC - MMOs

PC - Many more ways to connect ie: Full keyboard on top of ventrilo and TeamSpeak see: X-Fire, PlayXpert, AIM

PC - Better overall Quality, and generally cheaper price by $5-$15 to identical console counterpart

You know, PC gaming would be much cheaper than console gaming if we didn't feel the need to play on very high settings at high resolutions. I'm sure that you could buy a midrange gaming PC and make it last for 5 years, although you would be probably be playing on med/low settings for most new games by the end of that time. So basically saying that a pro is that consoles will work for 5 years is kind of like saying that being able to upgrade your PC is a con. I guess it is a con if you are obsessive about upgrading, but really it's just the want to play on higher settings than consoles is what makes it arguably* more expensive the consoles.

*I say arguably because I think that if you build a reasonable mid-range PC, then by the fact that games are so much cheaper and some longer lasting, you could easily break even in less than a year.

As a gamer i do play on both my Xbox 360 and PC, so i have alot of unbiased things to say, but i'm just going to keep this brief.

For PC:

1) You have much more flexibility, for example you have the abillity to install a game wherever you want and modify your SAV files, if you so desire. On a console, if your profile gets corrupt, then your pretty much screwed no?

2) console commands, obviously not available on a 360/ps3 - i love typing in Commands and spawning random enemy's in FO3, experimenting with codes can be fun! :)

3) NO framerate Issues - Assuming you have the hardware, you wont get annoying drops in framerates - when i was playing too human on the 360, (which by the way i love that game!) im a lvl 50 cyber beserker, now at that level i get swarmed with enemies and the game starts to Laagggg! >:( had too human been on the PC however and im sure it would have been a much happyer story.

4) Graphics/3D Graphics - yes i know its probably the most obvious thing but its true, PC can handle much better graphics and Dev's are starting to pick up on that (finally!) and create awesome looking games, Furthermore We can use 3D Vision from Nvidia,Zalman,Samsung or IZ3D, thats something which consoles DO NOT have.. yet anyway :P

5) No poopie Multiplayer like the consoles- what i mean is things like MW2 for instance, and the whole Dedicated Server Outrage, normally we get to pick our servers and BOOT cheaters.. consoles dont allow for that (though i wish they did)

For Console:

1) Instant Action (so to speak) just pop the disk in and hey presto you can play! none of that install buisness

2) CO-OP/Split screen (the social aspect) - This is a major selling point for consoles i think, because it creates a much more social atmosphere, i mean you can just sit down with 3 other people and play CO-OP Halo in storymode, while chilling out and catching up with each other, nothing can match that in my opinion (Sigh..if only we could to that on a pc too)

Ill have to come back and Edit this for some more console points, because 1 or 2 have managed to slip my mind while typing

P.S  PC's are great for porn? siriously.. that might be an astute analaysis but HOW is that advantage relevant to this discussion?

By the Way people, MGS 4, Halo 3 and probably Gears 2 are coming to PC too, like i said, Dev's are starting to Pick up on the potential PC has to Offer ;) The only reason there are more games on the colsoles is because of the dreaded P word which im sure i dont need to elaborate on.
