AMD 965 BE or i7 860

Recommended Posts

I mostly agree, although I don't think money is an issue in this case. If I had $2000 to spare, there's no doubt I'd get a Core i7 + HD5870

For 2k I'd put emphasis on dual HD5870 first and then see what remains for the CPU. But I am pretty sure you would have enough for an i7 860.

So I am looking for some thoughts. I went to see my brother in law yesterday. We talked computers but it only left me with

more questions than answers. Turkey was good though. Mmmmmm.

My thoughs are to build a new system and the cost is set around $2000 Canadian. (1850USD)

I am looking to make the machine portable and it is my understanding that this will take any large CPU coolers

out of the loop as I am going to be moving it all the time and I dont want to break the motherboard.

I know that this will hurt my abliity to overclock but I am only mildly into it as it is. I do major photoshop stuff

use preimer a fair amount. Games Aion, end war, hawx and I am thinking about seeing what I have been missing in

Crysis.

List of parts I was looking at

Lain li B10

Corsair 750TX

8gb Patriot Sector 5 DDR3 7-7-7-7-20

cooler spinq (CPU) or Ideas?

1tb WD black

5850 or 5870

Now here is the Real problem. Been an AMD guy for some time and I am looking at the AMD 965 BE but the new Lynfied has

come out and there is no answer from the AMD camp. The i7 960 is $100 more than the 965 but there will be more CPUs coming

for the P55 I would imagine and I am wondering it the AM3 has reached the end of it's road. Thoughts please.

i say pick whichever one has the highest pin and transistor count...

My experience has been exclusive with AMD. The 965 and 955 procs I run every day to do tasks from Photoshop etc. as well as games like Crysis, Far Cry, WoW, and other graphics intensive games and I always find myself saying " man I'm glad I didn't spend all that extra money on an Intel setup. The money you save vs performance makes AMD procs well worth it. I know the stats say that Intel is faster but my eyes can't tell the difference. But my wallet sure noticed!

You're probably right!? I've no doubt the i7's and i5's beat the 965 hands down in most benchmarks but how do they perform in the real world? How many FPS in games, time difference converting a video file, etc., I bet it isn't much?

Cheers

Paul

It doesn't make much of a difference in games, but in processor intensive tasks, video encoding for example since you brought that up, the i7 860 is significantly faster

bro this is so true...the return of hyperthreading to the intel line is awesome...

...last nite i was folding on 4 consoles, chatting on facebook and browsing all at the same time and my temps never went over 60c.

well i think it's imperssive and unlike anything i've ever experienced before.

+1 for the build posted earlier on this thread, but I don't really know much about GEIL RAM and a CCF would be a better cooler than Gemini.

I think one should compare i5 and 965.. not i7 860!! I think i7 is way costlier than AMD Quads but i5 is more or less the same, similar in performance too!

p55 is future proof , maybe intel will make 6 core cpu for 1156 platform , it is a new platform and performs very well so it is future proof ..:)

nobody knows what intel is preparing ..

People do know what Intel is preparing, probably not exact specifications but that is why they release "road maps"

I don't really follow them but..The P55 chiset is not meant to replace the X58 which is why the 6 core chips will be for X58. And not for the P55 chipset.

Although I did hear about the 32nm working with P55 chisets. So a person can still go that route.

With your budget, your good with any type of computer man....

If you want to save money, you might want to take a look at this (Im getting ready for the flamming...)

http://forums.overclockersclub.com/index.p...howtopic=168710

Yeah made by me XD

Now for PHOTO editing....

It's really hard to say, for example take a look at this:

http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/charts/cpu....69,76&tid=9

Then at this:

http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/charts/cpu....9,76&tid=10

As you see, the phenom 955 is not part of this list, not done yet.

But I suspect it, especially with a little basic 3.8 overclock on stock fan, to be somewhere between the Q9450 and the E8500....But it's pure speculation...

You win about...10 seconds let's say :/ dunno if it's worth the extra 100$, But with YOUR budget, you can do anything you want.

Also, you might want to REconsider..P55..

This is what AMD plan for AM3:

http://www.fudzilla.com/content/view/15939/35/

http://www.fudzilla.com/content/view/15619/35/

http://www.fudzilla.com/content/view/15567/35/

This is intel's response to the praised P55...Always said this socket had not good looking future:

http://www.fudzilla.com/content/view/15749/35/

Reducing the cache and higher prices... that doesnt look good, especially if you game, where cache is important.

The rest is up to you, but don't forget were talking about 100$/~10~15 seconds.

It's really up to how you value your money. But if you have the intention to use it, then I say you should go i7-920 on a safe LGA1336 with a good looking future :D

Just my 2 frame :)
