With all the recent talk about drive failures, it's a good idea to update your drive to the newest firmware ;)

Follow the steps found here:

http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/self...&NewLang=en

Edit: Seems like you might just want to use other drives -_-

I was going to update my 1.5tb, it has the SD17 firmware but with all the bricking I am scared to do anything. Then again people are saying they die at around 4 months so damned if I do and damned if I dont. One thing is for sure this is my last Seagate drive...

Well I guess I better back up all my data, I hear WD are fixing to come out with a 2tb so I am kinda waiting on that. Hey Dave Seagate is also offering free data recovery on failed drives also...

They rolled out 500GB platters, so we should see 2TB 3.5" drives and 1TB 2.5" drives :)

I have been staying up on this....

seems the newest firmware helps all but the 500gb drives...it bricks them as soon as they are flashed...

I wouldnt flash ANY drive until I read at the Seagate forums that it has been fixed for all...

I personally will NOT buy a Seagate/Maxtor drive...

I have a friend that used to work at Sun Micro Systems that refurbed their blades and one of the customers specified Seagate drives and from my source 30% were defective and alot of them came DOA and some died rather quick....since then i have stopped using them...thier return rate is too high for me...

But WD had a problem a while back and we all went to Hitachi...now I have WD and Samsung...I prefer Samsung and those are pretty sweet drives...but I like WD for the speed...

you just cant beet the speed of the AAKS or the AALS black...

Thanks for the info, I have always like WD but thought I would try Seagate once more with this 1.5tb. I dont know why I bought another Seagate as the last one I bought a 160gb quit after a few months, of course they sent me a refurbished drive replacement, seems like I would have learned. I have 2-500 AAKS laying here, I just hooked one up and backed up my data was getting 63mb transfer according to vista from the 1.5Tb to the 500.

I like all my harddrives, I have 2 western digitals, two seagates, and one iomega. They all work like champs for me. were those DOA's OEM and not formatted from RAW? I was pissed because I had to format the two seagates in windows disk management for them to appear in windows and thought you had to do that for every seagate, but I just bought a 500gb scorpio blue and had to do the same thing. My oldest seagate is the 750gb which I've had for almost 8 months now and within the last month or two bought a 1TB and LOVE it.

I wouldn't pick any over the other (though I hear the Caviar Blacks/Spinpoint F1's are the ones to talk to for a fast/large harddrive for the money)

I think my Seagate analysis is complete, with a thumbs up to them. It's off to the Samsungs, and maybe a Hitachi thrown in there too. I actually have an old IDE Hitachi 160gb sitting on my shelf that I took out of my friends computer he was scrapping, it still works but I just hate IDE so I don't use it much, I'm thinking about putting Mandriva/Ubuntu or maybe Windows 7 on it. At the very least I'd make it Vista also in case my Raptor were to go down for whatever reason.
