8800gts G92

Recommended Posts

So i need to replace my vid card (b-day is coming up)

Im prolly gonna ask for this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814127325

I mainly play wow but Im always checking out new games (and I want to run oblivion very well)

is that a good card ^^?

or is there a better one for the price. the most graphic intensive game Ill be running is oblivion (elder scrolls IV) but I want it to run....like on high settings.

Any other suggestions, that seems like SUCHHHH a good deal.

I've heard the 9600's nvidia have like...."issues" or are they a better deal.

and whats better 8800gts or 8800gt, they seem to be around the same price (altho the GTS's seem to be l;ike a tad (70mhz or so) faster)

also I notice these are all PCI-E 2.0.

i have a Intel Mobo (it's from the retailedge program) and it's PCI-E 1.0.

will that work ok?

thx

i'm not sure on how good the card is but i'm pretty sure the 8800gts is better

also my friend has the gts in a 1.0 slot and it works fine its probably a little slower then it would be but you should be fine

The 8800 GTS 512mb are faster than GTs and the other GTSs. As for better card for similar price, idk. I haven't been following PC hardware prices, but I'm pretty sure there might be better cards for around that price.

Also, all PCIx 2.0 cards are backwards compat.

It might be worth considering some of the 4850 models that have rebates at the moment (like this one).

After some admittedly quick googling, it looks like the two cards are pretty evenly matched, but I just thought I'd present another option.

Some quick notes...

Dual slot cooler is much better than the single slot cooler, for the 8800's

128 shaders vs. 112 shaders for GTS vs GT

My 8800GTS512 OC's like mad...a 100MHz OC is pretty common.

They are GREAT at folding. Mine at 700 core will do 5600 PPD. I've hit 6000 PPD with additional overclocking, but I like to run a little cooler.

If I was building a farm, I'd have grabbed a bunch of the b-stocks...

:foldon:

I do agree with everyone else, though. It is a great card...but not the best option for gaming. ^_^

wait? so whats wrong with it for gaming with stuff like oblivion and such (i wont be planning on playing crysis or anything like that)

and really what would be better for me.....an 8800GTS or a 9600GT? they both seem about the same? 8800 has better reviews tho

and does the single slot cooling stay "adequatly" cooled. my comp usually stays well ventilated either way, i've heard these cards get VERY VERY hot and not to leave the fan on auto......has anyone had overheating issues with these cards (Or are they pretty thermally resistant)

edit: unless im blind I actually didnt notice any "dual' slot cooled 8800gts's?

edit2: Also don't BFG's have a good warrenty? they seem to have good reviews. all i ever buy is EVGA but assuming their still out when my b-day comes around is BFG ok too?

Don't get me wrong...I love the card, I'm just saying that if you're going to spend $150 on a video card, there might be better options...(4850).

The evga B-stock is a steal at $100.

The single slot cooler is adequate. I wouldn't use it, personally, unless you needed more PCI slots, and then it'd be pretty warm, regardless.

I went from a 6800GT to a 8800GTS...man it was a huuuuge upgrade.

I would also get at least 2GB of memory...it's almost a requirement nowadays for gaming.

For warranties...I like XFX, evga and BFG. I've only ever dealt with evga, and they were quite good. I've heard pretty good things about the rest. All have lifetime warranties (dependent on the card...special things like b-stock or some of evga's budget cards have worse warranties). It's up to you.

I've never seen a 8800GTS512 that didn't have a dual slot cooler...

Example of a card with a stock dual slot cooler

Example of a card with a stock single slot cooler

See the difference in thickness? The dual slot cooler exhausts hot air out the back, too.

The 8800GTS is a lot better than the 9600GT. But as ^ said, a 9800GTX could also be a great idea.

is the 9800gtx better than the 8800gts(g92)? either way both are going to be good for you but the 4850 is another awesome card to be had as well.

Yes...but they're very close. The 9800GTX+ is a smaller chip fab process, so it's lower power / overclocks higher. At that price point, if you're not folding, I'd look at some of ATI's offerings. If you go a little higher in price and you'll start getting into GTX 260 vs HD4870 territory.

You might want to state which resolution you're running at...it can make a sufficient difference. Most of the aforementioned cards will do just about anything at 1280x1024. My 8800GTS runs great at 1920x1080 (but, I only really play source games and UT3)

Drivers and folding performance were some of my prime considerations, it may be different for other people...
