Hehe, another av thread.

Symantec av corp, (norton corp name).

The only one I really trust.

I heard f-prot is good.

I checked it out, seems good as an interface and the like, and less hassle to clean for those manual scans only like thing...

But I have no idea if it's a good av or not really.

I have keep tabs on that one maybe to find out.

Never trusted macafe av...

Never, to many false positives, it's funny to see it run one someone else's rig...

Very funny I think, and people pay for that....

Lately it ticked off quite a few network admins I guess.

Read the news on that one, just check around the sites...

Should still be around, happened this month.

Killed some servers because of it, some just worried(depends on the config they had setup).

Only the enterprise users got fixes afterwards too ^^, I would bet by now they got fixes for everyone but still...

Then again norton is no better, the av for the corp users is totally diffrent.

Some people like that macafe thing though.

Firewalls.

Hack windows, helps big time.

Firefox, again helps alot.

Spoof, again helps alot.

With the above you don't need a firewall no joke.

But if you want a firewall.

Zonealarm.

Allways been buggy as heck but still, good firewall for the majority of stuff, but defently does'nt block everything :.

Blackice, hell no!

Bad bad bad!!!, used to be spyware, if it is'nt still, does'nt block crap.

Deerfield visnetic firewall.

These guys took over that one firewall that was the absolute best..

I forgot the name of that one though..

Maybe I can find it...

Ah the name was ConSeal.

This firewall was nuts, blocking stuff that zonealarm could'nt even see.

The new one from deerfield though.

I never took the time to set it up before.

I've dl'ed it twice and I was gonna set it up but never did, so I have no idea if it's any good or not.

Conseal was the shiz though.

Zonealarm, like I said, good for 75% of the stuff out there.

Jsut that you allways have to sit there and unlock then relock the thing to get it working right sometimes.

Then exit and re-open it, stuff like that.

Allways been that way :.

That and like I said, it does'nt block as much as you think, but it's pretty decent app wise(though sorta lacking in that respect too).

Still good though.

I'd say it's better then nothing.

Firewalls, you have to set them up hardcore to get anything out of them.

You can't realy on those auto setups at all.

Guest Synchronize

I use kasperesky it really does it's job very well and have tried many other AV's but they don't even come close. As for firewall, i just use the XP intergrated one seems to be doing it's job as i haven't had any attacks or hacks. Norton firewall is very good too, i used that till my subscription ran out.

For generic firewalls tests I go to the symantec site for those av and trojan scans.

Even if I have to spoof it(They don't like that either lol...).

I also goto:

grc.com

All port scan and leak test would be good ones.

I only have 1 port open with no firewall, a few stealth(might be due to isp on this one but does'nt seem like it as it differs between my os'es).

Rest are blocked.

Same on nortons site.

That's what you get when you regedit some junk out of windows :).

That and you del batmeter.dll and webcheck.dll, both leave holes if in windows.

Gotta del alot of reg keys though I admit to achieve all that.

Check the scnas out anyways.

At a min, check out grc's, I think I prefer that one myself.

I don't have to goto the hassle on spoofing(which is a pain on nortons site to unblock, then block, refresh etc etc, over an over until it works, totally messed up).

That and grc's scan is alot more detailed.

The only other way to scan after this is to check for ACKs.

That's how I doit.

If you're supposed to be blocking yet something still gets an ACK...

I suppose using a port sniffer would work too.

Etc etc.

AV: Avast Antivirus Pro (home edition is free but i like pro), covers everything, protect everything (decently) and use minimum system resource. got a license from the office... its about $40. not bad at all..

Firewall: Router's NAT. I used D-link or Linksys, always great.

software firewall: psygate. wicked wicked firewall.

Zone Alarm Suite gets my vote. best firewall ive used. you can make it as simple or as diverse as you need. the AV side seems to be holding its own.

Sygate feels good but when you let something connect it allows it to also serve untill you manually change it. i didnt like that

BlackICE is just crap but some people seem to love it for some reason, it doesnt have an application blocker so if you get a trojan/worm it wont stop it dialing home

As for XP's firewall its like having no firewall at all

Norton i just dont trust, I think those buggers put the viruses out there to sell more copies

plus its a system hog

AVG is great but sometimes it crashes during updates, rare but it happens. but its very good on resources

Panda is nice I cant remember why I stopped using it but there was a good reason  i think it didnt uninstall right.

Guest oRiOn

All my computers in my house run NOD32, I love the program, I always know I am safe because it gets everything and it updates about 16 times a week. For firewall I use my router.
