bigred Posted July 24, 2003 Posted July 24, 2003 well, just stopped at home for lunch today, and I have over 30 popup adds on my desktop. Popupstopper can't / won't work to stop them. Deal old Savenow is back again, GAIN is back again, and a new and cute one shows up. This time it's in the services for windows, but has NO name! if anyone knows what in the heck this thing actually is, let me know. I LIKE writiing to groups like GAIN and Savenow to be REAL mean to them.

C0DE Posted July 24, 2003 Posted July 24, 2003 uninstall kazaa and reinstall kazaa light... no extra crap with install. there are some popup stoppers that dont allow anything to open unless you hold cntrl+leftclick. also what you mean as a microsoft thing with no name? in your "msconfig" startup?... cause i have that too and wanted to know what it was. its just blank. i usually am on a router and that eliminates all popups except adds which my popupstopper stops.. but i know your pain. bravo364 Posted July 24, 2003 Posted July 24, 2003 I use a program called Adsgone. I ain't trying to plug them or anything but I started with their 20 day trial and it works really good. Are you going to the Lan party this saturday? If you are look me up and I will show it to you on my machine, I have been really impressed with it! bigred Posted July 24, 2003 Posted July 24, 2003 (edited) no kazaa. it's from my gf going to these sites trying to find new programs for here divx stuff. her favorite divx player also installs GAIN (one the prime evils in the world). everytime one of these sites pops up and asks if she trust them she clicks yes using the recomended program of spyhunter. I kept seeing it's name all over the web. It goes thru and not only cleans them up, but does not allow the spyware programs back! PS best popup ever "Free Popup Stopper" just popped up while I was looking for this program Edited July 24, 2003 by bigred
Trakfast11 Posted July 24, 2003 Posted July 24, 2003 (edited) i started having pop up problems yesterday for some strange reason too (a ton of them)! and had some other applications automatically installed without my knowledge (and i don't accept or click yes when those things ask me about installing them). Purity Scan and some other name was added to my Program Files (was able to get rid of one of them, but that didn't fix the problem. i then unistalled everything that i knew i didn't install or i knew that was not part of XP updates and such. i then compared it to my other XP system that is about 3 weeks old since i reformatted it. I still had the problem. and for some strange reason when i go to View -> Toolbars -> i find one of the options is blank and when i select it i get some extra area for typing on the browser. not sure what installed it though. also yesterday my default webpage was automatically switched at some point. curious, is anyone else having these problems after going to the outwar site? i've been there once before and haven't had these problems afterwards. yesterday i did finally find a way to stop it though. I installed ZoneAlarm v3.7 (free). haven't had a problem with advertisments popping up since then. i did, however, find out that i needed to add FAH3Console to the Program Control (it wasn't able to connect with the folding servers for a little over 1 and a half hours until i got back and changed it.) P.S: i don't use KaZaa so it couldn't be that. Edited July 24, 2003 by Trakfast11
bigred Posted July 24, 2003 Posted July 24, 2003 (edited) wow, you just explained the exact same thing. I walked out to the sytem in the livingroom, which is the home entertainment system. NO ONE installs anything on it. Sure enough it was doing it too. Purity scan was one of the problems there. ad ware 6.0 removed 308 entries for spyware software. 215 of them were less than 48 hours old! Misled Posted July 24, 2003 Posted July 24, 2003 Gain trickler is the spawn of Satan... You can get that divx player without the adware junk. You just have to look around a bit on the Divx site. I also notice the no-name program in msconfig. I still dont know what its doing but unchecking it wil stop it from running. Also a program called WheresJames Startup manager will let you do all that from the taskbar. I would also give SpyBot a shot. Ive had good success with that one catching stuff even Adaware missed. ZoneAlarm w/one of these two programs will quickly kill all of the pop up issues.
