Black64 Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Just thought of a cool idea, but it would be to costly to be real. Would it be possible to use somewhere around 10-30 monitors in a circle and be able to use them like a full surround view? For example could it be possible to set them up where you could move the mouse in a complete circuit? Image to make it clearer. Prunes Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 (edited) The games would have to support it, which they currently do not do. Theoretically it would be possible though. Just need A LOT of gpu power, since it'd have to compute everything around you all the time. Also, it wouldn't make much sense, since you can't see behind anyways. Well the point is you would use it with 7.1 audio, so if you hear something behind you you can see it right away, almost like real life and then you turn to face it on the game. There is an issue with that if you turn your sound would need to turn with. So would you put the screens as well as your desk and speakers on tracks and have them spinning around to meet each other with movements of the mouse. At the moment that looks like a desk and you would look over your shoulder and then do what? If you went with a revised version of the bf3 sim you would pan with the scope of your weapon with a wide display from the progectors that follows you round you walk ect and your vertical height is much larger unless you try using something like 40"+ TVs in portait. Shifty2105 Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 it would be even better if it had a swivel chair with a keyboard and mouse attached so when you turn your character around it moves with it
Tjj226_Angel Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 Maybe instead of a circle, perhaps just a horse shoe? That way instead of having it a full 360 and having to turn around, you can just turn your head, or when it is directly behind you, you can use your mouse. Also you wont be trapped. Another idea would be to use projectors. It would be costly, but not as bad as 30 monitors (I think). Plus if you have a room that could do it, you would only be using 3 monitors (projectors) so it should work.
The Question Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 How would your control system work? What would be the point of the mouse at that point if you are physically reorienting your body in space? As far as the sound goes, not only would you have to change the physical position of the speakers with your viewpoint, you would also have to have software to tell the sound system which direction you're facing so the sound positions can be adjusted to match. In real time. Barring that you would have to have a dedicated positional audio system. This wouldn't be a matter of front/ back/ side but more than likely use a 360 degree reference system with fixed 0 point. The software would then need to share hat same reference point to be able to shunt audio to the appropriate sound channel. I agree your best bet would be to go with multiple overlapping projectors and a 360 screen of some kind. Maybe a dome to reference the overhead points. Also, it would need to extend to the floor, with a group of large LCD panels in the floor to simulate ground cover. Screw it, just get a holodeck!
