Need X2 help

Recommended Posts

My cpu is acting weird, when at full load each invidual core runs fine. But when both are being stressed stuffs starts to crash. This happens if I'm running stock or if I overclock. I've already played with the voltages and that doesn't seem to help anything. Is their a specfic bios needed to make this thing work? I'm running 7/04 right now.

704 has been told here in this forum to be removed from the bios and if nothing else suits you > run the 623-3 official and warrantiable bios.

You got any software on there to manage a dual cored AMD's processor? Mainly it ought to be one core working and the other basically idles unless a particular application or the O/s can do SMP. So if you are crashing it is most likely your setup is not overly stable anyway.

You check around and the number of users everywhere with some odd X2 problem is beginning to surface as all run to buy untested technology and be the first to get into the rodeo. Well the ride may be like riding a wild bull for a while until the majors Nvidia the driver writer and AMD and Microsoft sort out what must be done.

I took my 4800+ out since it and SLI were not getting along too well and of the few games I play> my favorite the 4800+ would NOT even let me play. Oh yes I tweaked and then searched and a pattern of X2 not debugged in my eyes began to appear and I pulled it from my board until more data is revealed.

Well I was trying to run two instances of superpi, everytime I do this one of them crashes within a split second. I've also set each instance of superpi to use a different core.

All I can say it that most of you did not study up on the X2 processors. They only have one memory controller across two cores and a super memory intensive task like superPi may have problems with only one memory controller. The next X2's are already said to be going to have 2 memory controllers and I bet dollars to doughnuts I know why since I have run an X2 for a few weeks.

Get the board stable and as stable as possible and you might get two instances of SuperPi to run but I am doubtful myself.

:shrug I have had my X2 for only a week and a half but it seems 3 times more stable than the Venice I had. I have dual primed for 12hrs plus and am currently folding with 2 instances running. Even with 2 running the work units finish faster than they did on my venice with only one running  . I will admit though that it was a lot harder to get tweaked. Overall I am very happy so far and it is way faster than any cpu I ever owned.

1. SPi, etc must be installed in TWO different dirs and then each processor must be

running from each dir. Forget but you may have to specify processor affinity for each instance also.

2. Jus tread this today that for games, specifying affinity fixed virtually all problems (RE BF2, etc)

I just ordered a 4200 to join the fray shortly.

you should also contact CrucialLabs at this forum as he works for Crucial and can give you good stable settings for those modules (I'm trying to acquire 2x1024 Ballistix myself as i have an X2 and verify)

I've tested both sticks, one of them was giving me memtest errors so I'm going to rma it. The other stick doesn't give any errors and when I test with only it in I still get errors so I don't think it's the memory that's doing this to me.

again I highly recommend you contact CrucialLabs before you do anything. You never want to RMA a single stick from a 2-DIMM matched pair...if you have to RMA one DIMM, send them BOTH back to make double-triple sure that the kit you get back will be a matched pair (I've seen nightmares where one stick out ofa kit was RMA'd and the replacement was slightly different than the one the customer still had and they would never work together)

but anyway...contact Jim (CrucialLabs) and he will take good care of you since he works for Crucial.

Putting aside the rma of my ram for a moment I'm starting to think something is wrong with my x2. It crashs everytime I try to utilize both cores. Am I doing something wrong or is it the chip?

I have alson been folding with two instances for more than a week now and my system is as stable as a rock. even more, while the FAH clients are running I have been reindexing my newsgroup databases + running Quick Par to repair a e set or rars and the system acts like a champ. I am running 704 with my mem running at DDR500

If you o/c you need to turn DRAM stength down a notch..Was the only way i could get my system stable..

Also if you jump into google there are windows drivers for X2's from AMD that help my system stay stable..

If my system is set right i when i dual prime the 2nd core always drops off..Just the settings nothing wrong with the system. The affitnity setting in the program helps alot to.

I am willing to bet its your settings not the core..

If you want me to post my settings just lemme know..THey are set for 4x512..And both cores are stable at 2.6ghz
