Aircooled Router!

Recommended Posts

Decided to post this here instead of the networking thread.

My router died last night due to extreme temperatures in this area (the router is in my bedroom and we have a cottage so the second floor is really warm). The temps last night in my room were around 31 degrees C and decidedly my Dlink router decided to crap out on me sometime during last night...

This is the third router that I have purchased in 6 years and the last one was bought around a year ago (all Dlinks).

The newer ones don't seem to like heat so much so I decided to modify the side panel of the older one with a 60mm fan mounted with o-rings between the fan and side cover (same construction so mounting wasn't an issue).

I used a 60mm fan grill as the template for the screw holes and center for the hole saw. the screw holes were drilled with a 3/16 inch drill bit and came ouy really well.

The fan is powered by a cheap transformer that is supposedly supplying 12 volts at .3 amps (more like 13 volts but the fan is a crappy one from a mod that didn't work from around 5 years ago).

I've got some pics that were taken by my 17 year old son on his webcam (bad quality but at least they show the fan and how it's mounted) of the modified side panel but I believe that pics need to be hosted as I can't seem to be able to upload them to this post. serves me right for not posting very often.

How do I get the pics in here???

Anyways, the kid's computers are back on line for their internet pleasures. :D

How do I get the pics in here???

you can upload them to http://www.imageshack.us and then paste in the "thumbnail for forums type 1" type code... or if the pics are 800x600 you can press the picture icon on the edit post textbox and paste in the direct link...

if you upload attachments to a post in the full editor (add reply, not fast reply) then you can use manage current attachments to insert (green plus) the pics into the post

this is the code for an image:

[img=http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/9478/175823st0.jpg]

so you copy the "Direct linking code for image" link, press the 5th icon in fast reply that looks kinda like a green mountain, paste it in there, and it adds the IMG tags :)

how about some more pics? :D

I had some heat issues with a D-Link router too. It was sitting on top of a shelf next to an incandescent lamp and would constantly reset (quite aggravating when downloading <_<). I didn't have any other problems before or after I put it there though.

I taped a small heat sink to the hottest chip on mine and it now works fine.

Please tell me you used thermal tape and not regular scotch tape, or worse, duct tape

Btw, mazakman, that's a pretty nice mod. I think I might consider moving my router to a cooler place to see if performance improves (it didn't help that I increased the power to the antenna via software, which definitely increased the heat ;))

Its AS5 and then there is electrical tape holding the HS to the board:

It works. You don't have to do it and it works for me so at least I'm B:)

  • 2 weeks later...

Bah! I'm a noob bishop!

At the moment I don't have the time or patience to figure out how to post the dang pics. It was easy a few years ago when you could just upload them from your computer.

Here are the links to the pictures:

The Dlink on the right is not a router but a 5 port switch. I modified the cover of the dead router and just switched covers with the switch. The dead router is what you see up front with the cover from the switch... somewhat confusing isn't it.

Still have a switch to modify that is downstairs.....
