Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar

Has any1 played the Stress Testing back in Feb. or part of the Closed Beta? I saw the game and it looks like a WoW remake but with LOTR Lore and more realistic graphics.

I noticed that they are selling Pre-order with some nice benefits unlike WoW where you don't get any benefits for pre-ordering only Collectors edition which means you get a picture book for the kids and an useless pet ingame.

Purchase Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar and receive:

* Access to the Open Beta! And the ability to keep your character from the open beta and bring it over to the real game after launch!

* Exclusive In-Game Items:

o The Enchanted Cloak of Regeneration, which increases your character's regeneration capacity.

o The Ring of Agility, which increases your character's chance of landing a critical hit.

* Special Membership Pricing: You will qualify for special membership pricing that allows you to choose the pricing plan to best suit your needs:

- $9.99 Monthly Subscription Fee ~OR~ $199 Lifetime Membership Fee, a one-time payment which eliminates the monthly subscription fees

With your pre-order, you will become a Founder which will guarantee you a slot in the upcoming Open Beta for LOTRO. Not only do Founders get a reserved space in the Open Beta, you also get in first! You can start playing on March 30th, 2007*. Anyone who is not a Founder must wait to play until April 6th*

Thats pretty sweet that they offer a lifetime plan. $200 forever, but that would be pointless for non hardcore players. I don't wanna rush into it and pay $200 of the bat and then find out how the game is. Luck for me Open beta starts on April 6th for non pre-orderers (Pre-orderers get Open Beta on March 30th and they have a reserved slot, while non-preorders don't). Pre-ordering doesn't end until April 25. So if I'm luckily enough to get a slot in Pre-order I can test the game out.

Also the $10 monthly thing only lasts until you finally cancel your subscription so after that happens and you want to play again you will have to pay the regular price of $14-15 per month which I think sucks. They also have cheaper payments paying subscriptions in bundles of months like WoW.

Yeah, I've been in closed beta for awhile. I'll give a more indepth review/thoughts next week. I have bowling tonight, and tomorrow I'm leaving to go snowboarding (and i'm not packed yet!).

In short, it's fun. There's good and bad, but mostly good. And the lifetime membership is awesome if you know for sure you'll be playing for 20 months (if you go by the other preorder price of $10/month). I know WoW players wish Blizzard had a lifetime membership option.

  • 3 weeks later...

I was in closed beta also, and I thought the game was awesome. However, this was my first-ever experience with an MMORPG, so I have no basis for comparison.

When you start out in the game, it has a lot of stuff you can do solo, to help you learn the nuances of the game. As you progress in level, the quests get very hard and it becomes a necessity to group up with people to complete. I was in a kinship (LOTRO term for guild) and I had no problems finding a group most of the time. The few instances where there wasn't many online were not a problem as the game still offers much to do solo. You can work on your profession, I was a metalsmith (armorer), or you can complete items in your Deed log, which gives you titles and trait bonuses. Basically, I rarely got bored, and was quite addicted to the game. I would buy the lifetime membership, but I have a baby due at the end of this month and probably won't be playing any games for a while.

Couple screenies for you: post-10262-1175514679_thumb.jpgpost-10262-1175514746_thumb.jpgpost-10262-1175514816_thumb.jpgpost-10262-1175514846_thumb.jpgpost-10262-1175514886_thumb.jpgpost-10262-1175514927_thumb.jpg

lol, that looks EXACTLY like WoW!

I'm going to assume that is sarcasm. Though I have never actualy played WoW, I have seen plenty of screens from it and it looks pretty cartoony to me. Which is not to say WoW is bad, that's just been the style of graphics from at least Warcraft 3, I don't want to offend anyone who may think I'm picking on WoW and start a flame war. :)

I thought the LOTRO graphics were quite detailed and aimed at being realistic looking. The scenery was quite amazing in a lot of places. Was taxing on my video card sometimes though.

Here is my question..........What kind of races are there? Can you play as a wizard?

There were only FIVE wizards in all of Middle Earth ever (not to mention they were also god-like), so no you can't be a wizard.

Four Races:

Man

Elf

Dwarf

Hobbit

Seven Classes:

Captain (Team buffer with a pet; secondary healer)

Champion (Offensive Melee Specialist)

Guardian (Defensive Specialist)

Burglar (Rogue-like character; stealth, backstabbing, etc.)

Lore-Master (Pet-master with some mage-like abilities)

Hunter (Ranged DPS, no pet)

Minstrel (Main Healer)

Those are just basic descriptions...if you'd like to learn more on the races/classes, go here.

PS. There's also "Monster Play" where you can be an Orc, Uruk-hai, Spider or Wolf.

That's what I was afraid of :( You make a valid point though about their abilities. I just really wanted to play as a Gandalf the Grey type wizard but oh well. I think I am going to check it out and see how it is. Thanks for the info Clay

Doesn't everyone? :P:D. There's supposed to be an Oblivion-esque RPG for LOTR (The White Council?), but that was delayed indefinitely, so who knows what'll be of that. I'm sure in a single-player game like that, they'd give players more free reign to explore magic than they could in an MMO. Allowing everyone to be a wizard in LOTRO would be as bad as allowing everyone to be a Jedi in SWG....o wait, they did that
