I Need Help Playing A Video Xvid

Okay, so my friend sent me an episode of South Park. He said he got it from some Torrent site, and it was encoded in XviD. Fair enough. I download the XviD binary package, install, double click the file, and WMP says it is in an unrecognized format. Could this have to do with also having DivX installed? If I uninstall DivX, will I still be able to play my DivX movies?

No, DivX and Xvid are separate codecs. I have both installed on my system and it results in no conflicts when playing videos. I use the DivX player when Windows Media Player refuses to play anything and that usually takes care of it. There are rare occasions where I don't have any codec installed that will do the job, but like I said, those are rare.

Download the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack.

Codecs..

:withstupid: That's what I use and I have been able to play everything I've found so far. I suggest you use Media Player Classic as the player (included with full and I think the standard install). Don't use that link though, this has the latest version (2.48) http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm

  • 2 weeks later...

I had bad luck with 'codec packs' in the past. They all just tended to make a giant mess of things.

For me, it's as simple as installing the DivX codec, installing the XviD codec, and finally installing ffdshow. I've never had a problem with any XviD or DivX stuff this way before, ever.

You appear to already have XviD so... here's a link to ffdshow.
