As5 Compound, When To Re-apply?

to start with i run AS-5

ive seen mention of people reapplying their compounds on various occasions.

just when would someone want to do this? i thought once your compound gets "broken in" it never needed to eb re-applied. would this be only when you take the heatsink off to do some sort of cleaning?

....just when would you?...and what are the signs you need to?

I usually change mine every 6 months or 6000 web pages :D You should be good for awhile...If you were running a thermal pad then you would be good for a long time, but with the thermal grease you have to re-apply it sooner, like I said I do mine every 6 months, others may do it sooner or even later. If your temps start to jump then put some new stuff on it! :foldon:

:withstupid: yea....after a while the silver in the compound just starts to loose its luster so to speak. Because if the high temps it is put under to fluid that the silver is in slowly burns off leaving the silver behind and creating places where the contact betweent the HS and the CPU aren't as great as when you first applied it.

Happy OC'ing and as always.......... :foldon::foldon:

i understand.

im gonna have to re-apply then. it seems a bit early tho but ive run my temps lately to the high 40's during some burn-in procedures and i guess that was a bit too hot ofr the compound.....that and the fact that ive just found out ABIT's temp sensors read low....im still a little scared after hearing that.

so ill have to re-apply it...after not yet 2 months (late may to now). i doubt ive smoked the chip, but my temps have crept up. right now im seeing 25 system/ 42 load folding only at 2.2Ghz @ 1.5v and the volcano at half speed. (im used to seeing 37 load with the volcano at low setting)

ill re-apply and see where i stand. im gonna go lap the sink sometime in the future too. im on my way to home depot now anyway so ill just pick up the things i need there while im at it.

yeah, 42 load at half speed is pretty much cold... i get 47 load half speed and that took some work... it only goes down to 45/46 at full speed tho...

retail bartons run at 60-70"C with the stock heatsink... you're hardly in any danger at 42! :D

and are you STILL @ 2.2GHz... man, how long's this break-in lasting?! :O

you're a patient man, but i think the point of breaking in is to get the cpu used to a speed.... so you might wanna push that oc up before it gets "used to" a lowlt 2.2Ghz...

its not just that.....its that it running HOTTER than it usually has on comparitively equal temperature days. i was at 2.4Ghz and decided to reduce it for the hot days after i was at 50c load on full volcano power....as my system temp was at one point 38c....

its just that im turning up the fan more than its been before for the same speeds lately at equal case temps. ill give it a bit and see...ill probably reapply in a week or so depending on if i see the same trends continue up or stabilize
