Rokkaholik Posted December 3, 2017 Posted December 3, 2017 I'm not sure why this started happening, but now my internet explorer always starts upon bootup. I'm assuming something with one of their recent unknown updates that I despise. I've gone into msconfig and the startup items and IE is not in there. What may be causing it? I do NOT use Edge
ccokeman Posted December 3, 2017 Posted December 3, 2017 Sounds like you installed something recently that may have had some malware.

cchalogamer Posted December 4, 2017 Posted December 4, 2017 Sounds like you installed something recently that may have had some malware. I don't think so this time. I actually ran into this with a computer that I setup a few days ago with a fresh Windows 10 install. For it it seems to be a 90% of the time it starts the default browser at boot up (at first it did edge, once I installed and defaulted Chrome it changed to it). I'll be honest I haven't even started looking at it as the build is very low priority at the moment but when I get back from the TV setup job I have in about an hour I think I'll dive into it and see what I can figure out. Rokkaholik Posted December 4, 2017 Posted December 4, 2017 It started after I tried to shut down one night and Windows wanted to do some updates, so I clicked on the Update and Shut Down option.... Thought it was some new default setting thing. Oddly enough, It didn't do it today when I booted, but it has for the last month pretty much every time. I ran Malwarebytes in safe mode and it axed 7 hijack attempts. I plan to redo Windows anyway at the end of the month. I need something to do on my 10 day vacation anyway
cchalogamer Posted December 5, 2017 Posted December 5, 2017 So I've been poking around the PC I was having the same issue with and so far nothing but after 3 reboots it only opened the browser once. I honestly don't feel like fooling with it at the moment but at least I can pretty much rule out malware and the only software installed is Win 10 (ISO direct from Microsoft) chrome and steam. Maybe tomorrow I'll try a bit harder.
That_Guy Posted September 25, 2018 Posted September 25, 2018 (edited) I have reinstalled Windows, first initial boot was fine, but what I went back to the BIOS to change boot priority, same error kept coming up and I couldn't get in. However was able to start in safe mode, once I restarted from that, it seems to work. I'm going to restart it a couple quick more times to make sure. Then we can test performance. Nice dark font to mask that link you have hidden in the word "quick". Someone delete him please Edited September 25, 2018 by That_Guy
AkakmanH Posted September 25, 2018 Posted September 25, 2018 (edited) Programs can run even if it is not in the Startup folder. Especially when you have the program running but minimized and take down Windows without closing the active program. Win 10 will start that program back up when you boot. In the Registry - regedit -Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run These are the programs that Win 10 will start on boot.
