Overclocker99 Posted November 27, 2016 Posted November 27, 2016 hello everyone! this is my first post on this site, i want to buy the ASRock B150M PRO4/Hyper motherboard to overclock an i5 6500. now the specs on the motherboard's page says that the motherboard has an external BCLK generator which should let me OC without being restricted by the BIOS updates. if i succeed in OCing the CPU, will i be able to read any of the CPU's temperature's? and is the AVX instruction set very important? ir_cow Posted November 28, 2016 Posted November 28, 2016 I do not see why not since all the bios revisions including the stock (original) supports CPU temperature readout. Unless I'm missing something new. Not sure about AVX instructions.
Braegnok Posted November 28, 2016 Posted November 28, 2016 (edited) Overview of the Intel Advanced Vector Extensions, https://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/introduction-to-intel-advanced-vector-extensions. Personally I would not disable or mess with AVX to possibly get a higher overclock,.. the instability hit would not be worth the small gain. http://overclocking.guide/stability-testing-with-prime-95/ Edited November 28, 2016 by Braegnok

xenkw0n Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 Some strict gamers that overclock disable HT all the time. That's a lot different than disabling AVX though.

xenkw0n Posted December 12, 2016 Posted December 12, 2016 I don't know. I guess they're hoping for better binned chips by getting the i7. I wouldn't ever do it. The minimal gain for specific situations isn't worth it to me for when I do video encoding. I guess I could jump back and forth but.. why? 3 more fps? Encrypted_God Posted December 16, 2016 Posted December 16, 2016 If you're not familiar with OC'ng. I suggest NOT to mess around just yet. Play with it and get to know the HW you have. I personally don't think it's a good idea to "jump right in with 2 feet" a OC. ....slow down young gun. My advice is this; Know your parts. OCing isn't always better. Performance is what WE ALL NEED. after you get the performance, get the OC and let's push it!!! That's IMO of course....

I've never seen any evidence that disabling HT was ever good for gaming except for over a decade ago when OS scheduling wasn't as good.
