EuroFight Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 I have a problem with my 2TB hard drive. Sometimes, during installs, the system will become unresponsive and, when checking the hard disk in 'Computer', it shows the HDD having less than 1GB of free space. If the page is refreshed the HDD can be seen to be filling up from 1.67TB to less than 1GB free, then back to 1.67TB, when the system becomes responsive again. Has anyone experienced this before, and should I RMA the drive? Cheers Euro
Black64 Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 What kind of installs?
EuroFight Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 Once when installing Flight Simulator X, another time when installing Paint.NET that I noticed. I think it may have when installing ME2 as well, but I'm not sure.
Black64 Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 (edited) It's tough to tell if it's a HDD problem or software problem. How long does it go unresponsive for? Also for fun, try installing Treesize to see what is filling up your HDD Edited April 25, 2013 by Black64
EuroFight Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 (edited) Only a short period of time - less than a minute. Oh it might be useful to note that the drive is new and passes SMART and SeaTools tests. Edited April 25, 2013 by EuroFight
Black64 Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 I am thinking it maybe a windows pagefile or virtual memory issue, what are your settings on those?
EuroFight Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 Page file set from 8192MB to 8192MB (8GB physical RAM installed). At the time of the lock-ups it was system managed, but it still showed as 8192MB
Black64 Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 Hmm, is it possible for you to test with a different HDD?
EuroFight Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 The rig ran fine in my old 250GB drive, no problems with install then. Just a thought, does Paint.NET use Windows Installer or InstallShield or something proprietary?
Black64 Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 I am gonna guess it is something wrong with your HDD, if that was your only changing factor then that must be it.
Cespenar Posted April 26, 2013 Posted April 26, 2013 I'm with Black64. If the HDD signals it is nearly full then it must be the firmware of it. Also .......... I may not know what I'm talking about.
EuroFight Posted April 26, 2013 Posted April 26, 2013 I was just thinking; if the Windows Installer portion of the OS is corrupt (obviously I reinstalled the OS after getting a new HDD) then could it lead to something like this?
