BluePanda Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 So I just got my AMD Phenom II 1090t X6 this week and finally had a chance to mess around with OCing today with a break from finals. However, I'm finding the whole "turbo core" thing to be very frustrating. It seems to not be working right half the time and then works here and there. I haven't run too many things with it, but I ran vantage to compare to my old tri-core just for fun. On the CPU test (AI Test) I usually get around 2000 OPS, which is about what I'd expect. So then I run it again and I only get 500-600 OPS. It doesn't make sense. I noticed it with y-cruncher too... I ran it once and my times were 16 seconds, run it again and I get 8 seconds. I don't know if I'm just missing something or what, but I can't get consistent results. Any ideas? Share this post Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

I'm not sure, but I'm thinking why don't you just disable Turbo Core and overclock the thing? MSI says it can support the processor, so I'd try locking the voltages in at stock, or near it, and see how high you can go. Best I can think of. Also, some quick looking says that turbo core will up the voltage of the processor, so if that is a worry of yours, you may want to disable it anyway. Everything works fine with turbo core disabled, but without heatsinks for my board I worry -- ran burn test for a bit with all 6 cores only at 3.6 but got the very hot electronics smell so I turned it off and went back to messing with the turbo core thing. I just want to know know why it only works sometimes. Seems weird. Guest_Jim_* Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 Well, you've doubled the core count anyway, so even if you can't OC it, you may still be better than you were, at least until you upgrade the motherboard or come up with some cooling for it. From what I saw while looking (quickly and not going into any kind of depth) Turbo Core will only activate when there's even pull on the processor for it to think it needs the higher clock AND when it is three threads that need it. It could be that what you were running was taxing the entire CPU, so Turbo Core wouldn't trigger as only half would benefit. This is one of the drawbacks to Turbo Core compared to Turbo Boost. TB allows for any number of the cores to overclock this way, and not just in groups of three. Good luck, with whatever you come up with for a solution! As soon as we turn on turbo core it'll randomly work...and the rest of the time it'll run at 500 operations per second (even though all cores are loaded).
