Well I finally am going to order my new system but with a strict budget of $1100 bucks shipp. I am going to re-use my 9600GT to be upgraded later so I can get better hardware. I went with AMD and ddr3, with shipping the build costs $1090. Any thoughts or suggestion would be welcome. I'm pretty much set on the case and the PSU unless someone can convince me otherwise. Going to order around Jan 4th.

What motherboard?

I just put together a AM3 build. PII 955, Asus 785G EVO, G.skill ripjaws (same as you), VX-450. It's bloody fast :)

We came in at a little over $620. I'm not sure you can chip off a whole lot more, but you might consider AM3 / DDR3. You might try shopping around some more for heatsinks.

The CPU and motherboard you chose does not support DDR3!! You need to take an AM3 Phenom II(every other except the 940) and an AM3 motherboard.

I always thought the 940 was AM3 like the 955 and 965 so I never even looked. Thanks for pointing that out.

Do you think it would be worth it to go with a X2 550 and a nice mobo? I just can't afford a 955 and a mobo that isn't junk.

I was also contemplating a X3 720, Any thoughts?

A 955 is $165, a decent budget board will run you $100 - 110. I was surprised at that newegg "deal"...shame on them

ASUS M4A79XTD EVO AM3 AMD 790X

Open Box: ASUS M4A79XTD EVO AM3 AMD 790X $87.99

The 785G's aren't quite as fast as the 790Xs, but they're worth looking into as well, they're cheaper. They come in both mATX and ATX for $90-100 :)

Thanks for those, I am really surprised that they would bundle an AM2 Proc with a ddr3 mobo, I didn't even think about it. Like I said before it is about 2 weeks until I order it unless something unexpected comes up. Someone said something about a different heatsink, I was thinking about a scythe kabuto but I like the look of the one I picked, why not try new tings?

This will be a HUGE upgrade over my current my current rig, a dual core anthlon 5000+ and I don't want to get anything wrong.

I think the real question is; 'what are you using for TIM?' ;)

Heh!

@ Gab: You could also grab a cheapo CPU and upgrade to the 6-core when they release it next year. You could take this. Personally, I always wanted to mess with this one. I am sure it will be strong enough once you unlock its second core and you overclock it. However it's not guaranteed to work.

The 650W PSU is good.. it is $78 now with MIR 750 TX @ $90 would be an option..

Drop Microsoft Office for Open Office, it's pretty awesome.. Google around for better distros..

I will stick with the 650, I don't like re certified stuff if I can help it. Literally save $1 on the hard drive lol. I will take the advice on the HDD.

then don't help it :P, this PSU is amazing you're missing out
