Onion Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 (edited) I'm looking for an air cooler for my quad. It has to be under 50 bucks, be rather quiet, and not too big. This will be going into an htpc (thermaltake bach case) so it can't be too tall, but wide is fine. Anyone have any suggestions? Right now, with a coolermaster cooler which is almost identical to the stock one (got for free) I get up to 72 celcius load at all stock! I really need to bring that down. Or maybe a VERY cheap water cooler. What do you guys think? Edited March 10, 2009 by l33t p1mp
dr_bowtie Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 I highly recommend Zalman coolers... here is a link to their refurb site... the 8700 is a good cooler for HTPC cases and works on a Quad... http://shop.ebay.com/merchant/refurbdoc_W0...QQ_fromZQQ_mdoZ
razor Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 hey dude, I have the ZeroTHERM FZ120, and it's great. my RAID just failed and I had to re-do everything, so I cant give you exact temps, but my Q6600 @ 3.2ghz never gave me temps anywhere near 72. IIRC, I dont know if I've ever seen my CPU break 60 - even when I had it @ 3.8ghz for Forum Warz last year. also - the rule is "good air cooler will cool better/more reliably than ANY cheapo water." you've been around this site long enough to have seen plenty of evidence that supports this. the FZ120 is on sale @ TigerDirect at least once every two months. with two fans in push-pull like mine's set up, I'd go up against a TRUE any day of the week. no BS. Onion Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 Thanks guys, I'll take that into consideration. Also, I'm replacing the 2 60 mm POS thermaltake noise makes that came with my case. What do you think of this? I'll be buying 2 of them and putting them as exhaust fans. They are as quiet as they get and have better dba:cfm than any other on the site. http://www.frozencpu.com/products/4271/fan...ml?tl=g36c15s57

Onion Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 I do recall saying 50 bucks tops, and it has to fit in an HTPC case, no?

This works great small cases http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16835118005as for the 60mms silenx is not all there cracked up to be your better off with panflos http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/pa60lowspfbb.html Thanks. Those are pretty loud for the cfm they put out. Is there anything quieter or stronger?
spectrascope Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 well that is the problem with silenx they don't meet there db specs they are about the same lound as the panflo's for less cfm and so far I have not seen any 60's that really move much air at all for silent apps. As far as the zalman is concerned it is pretty quiet in reality, have used 3 in htpc build and it can only slightly be heard at max speed. FUZi0N Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 http://www.crazypc.com/products/coolit-domino-938500.html How well does that perform compared to say a xigmatek or true?
