3 New Builds

1. The Rampage Extreme is exactly what it says: extreme, so why would u want to use 2 of them in computers that u don't want to be extreme?

2. Intel chipset = Crossfire, nVidia Chipset= SLI, there is no way to use SLI on Crossfire mobo or vice versa. The only intel chipset that supports SLI & crossfire is the x58 that is due to come out before christmas.

3. For the two family PCs a P35 mobo would probably enough depending on what the PCs would be used for.

Skulltrail also supports both SLI & CF

Ok, here's what I'd recommend. Take this more as an example of components, rather than rigorous endorsements of the specifics. Notice the reallocation of budget. ;)

Yours (purpose = gaming, roughly sorted by relevance):

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 $549.99

DFI LANPARTY UT X48-T2R $289.99

VisionTek Radeon HD 4870 X2 $549.99

CORSAIR CMPSU-1000HX $259.99

CORSAIR DOMINATOR 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 $124.00

Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1TB $129.99

LIAN LI PC-V2110B $379.99

SAMSUNG Black SATA DVD Burner $24.99

AuzenTech Auzen X-Fi Prelude $174.99 - MIR

SAMSUNG 245T-BLACK $659.99 (although...at the prices of some of the 24"...you might want to look at 1080p HDTV's...I did)

Total = $3143.91

Your family's (general purpose):

Intel Core 2 Duo E8600 $269.99

GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P 136.99 - MIR

CORSAIR 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 $69.99

PC Power & Cooling S61EPS 610W $109.99 - MIR

Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS 640GB $74.99

EVGA 512-P3-N980-AR GeForce 9800 GT $129.99 - MIR

LIAN LI PC-A17B $199.99

SAMSUNG Black SATA DVD Burner $24.99

SAMSUNG 2243BWX

Total = $1,306.91 (X2)

Which puts everything at $5867.73 without operating systems.

However...you can trim things appropriately. I like the Lian-Li cases, however they're pretty expensive. The soundcard is really nice, but not absolutely necessary. The monitor can be changed to a cheaper (or better...I haven't looked at how well they're performing) 24". I'm pretty sure your family won't need 9800GT's, you could look at something like a HD4670 or less (I'd weigh stability over performance here). They could also have 2x1GB memory kits. P35 or P45 for the motherboards are pretty safe calls. You could drop the processor down a notch or two and they probably wouldn't notice (at all).

I guess it all comes down to what you want to spend on each component...you can go overkill (most cases here) or save quite a bit of money and reduce some of the components. If you trim enough off the family's computers, you may find budget for a second HD4870X2 or a larger monitor...

I'd recommend Vista X64 for 4GB of memory or more. XP x32 is still a safe bet for 2GB, however, Vista isn't quite as bad as everyone puts it out to be.

in the builds for the family, wouldn't a q6600 be a better long term option, particularly if there isnt going to be too much gaming. But it would be better for multitasking and possibly more longevity ?? anyways the e8600 is overkill, when you wouldn't see too much of a difference with a e8400. (I am gaming on a E8500). I would also drop down to a cheaper gpu, as the 9800 is overkill. For a general use computer, you really shouldn't be spending more than a grand.

:withstupid: i agree with alexvision, why get a dual core for a home computer when you can get a quad and a 9800 GT is pointless unless your going to be folding or transcoding with CUDA.

For a home computer I would look at an AMD based system, cheaper and gets the job done as long as your not gaming.

Nvidia NForce 7 MB 169$

Phenom 9950 -$194

OCZ Platnuim RAM (DDR2 800mhz 2x1gb) 44.99 (14.99 after rebate)Seagate 500 GB hard drive - 69.99

9600 GT 99.99

Coolermaster 335 49.99

500 watt power supply 59.99

Sony DVD burner 39.99

Total = $728

or you could go intel and switch out the MB and CPU with

680i+q6600 289.99

and total is $654

true, but id build the two home computers slightly cheaper and go . crazy on the gaming(core i7 wink wink). might actualy wait for i7 for all of them, if you got the cash might as well use it a little more wisely IMO.

haha yeah when i found out about the core i7/x58 yesterday i decided to wait on rebuilding my system LOL

i think waiting for i7's for the other 2 is a bit more overkill than i want tho, the reason for me wanting super gpu/cpu's in them is the possibility of gaming use in the future.

all the ideas i have read here have really helped me cut costs and still be happy that im building good systems so thanks :D
