And is there an update to your findings?

Hey ms,

I had an opportunity over the weekend to throw the 4850 into my primary rig and run a few quick tests and benchmarks.

Test setup

Gigabyte GA-X38-DS4

Intel E8400 @ 3.8ghz

G Skill F2-8000CL5-2GBPQ 2X2gb @1015mhz

Gigbyte 4850 w/CATs 8.6(no hot fix) @ 740/1025 - 1.2v 3D apps - OEM fan duty cycle = minimum 40% TMin = 40C / Tmax=135C - Tslope%=10

GPUz version 0.2.5

Gigabyte 4850 @ 740/1025

Pixel Fill Rate = 11.8 GP/s

Texture Fill Rate = 29.6 GT/s

Bandwidth = 65.6 GB/s

eVGA 8800GTS 640MB @ 600/1406/900

Pixel Fill Rate = 12 GP/s

Texture Fill Rate = 28.8 GT/s

Bandwidth = 72 GB/s

3DMark06

Gigabyte 4850 @ 740/1025

13566 marks

eVGA 8800GTS 640MB @ 600/1406/900

11772 marks

Battlefield2 1680X1050 settings max

Gigabyte 4850 @ 740/1025

Min Max Avg

97 271 174.973

eVGA 8800GTS 640MB @ 600/1406/900

Min Max Avg

76 180 119.052

As you can see, both cards are capable of blowing out Battefield 2 at 1680X1050 resolution and all settings on max. So if you are using a 22" LCD monitor at 1680X1050 resolution either card is capable of maintaining well over 60fps. However, the Gigabyte 4850 card just tears this title up.

It depends on what res onces gaming at and what budget, personally I would go for the HD4870 one it can go to HD gaming so I m preparing for that and its outstanding for the money you part with. Well so is the HD4850. hell they all are I m staying away from the 9800 because its the name as the 8800.

I have two 9800GX2 and they are polished products. Over the past two months my cards have gotten faster with every driver update and I have had ZERO crashes! As far as benchmarks go these things are tit for tat with even the newest 600 a pop cards. Nvidia is already stressing to stop production of these so they can move the new 280s.

Amazing card and best for the buck for 2008. I play a variety of games on MAX at 2560 x 1600 and its just smooth. Add in some PiP of the Olympics in HD to the bottom right corner at the same time. Can any other card on the market do this?
