sunnyeagle Posted April 26, 2008 Posted April 26, 2008 I am looking to buy a laptop. I have been checking out the 17 inch lcd ones. I will not traveling very much, but when I do, it will not be a problem. I have looked at; http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetai...ctCode=10008316 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16834114446 This one has my eye on it vote, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16834114470 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16834114440 I want fast CPU and 2-4 gig of memory. I do not need to play games on it. It also must have good speakers. I will be watching movies, listening to music, reading and surfing. I can wait to get home to play games. sailindawg Posted April 26, 2008 Posted April 26, 2008 Not to be totally off the wall, but I always try to get the most pc for the least dollar. I wanted to get a laptop that I could use on my boat for navigational purposes, watching movies and if available, wireless to access internet at a marina for weather updates. I did not want to spend big money, because if I wrecked the laptop, I did not want to be out major money. I tried some consignment shops, but they were a little pricey. I ended up going into the local pawn shop. I picked up, for $230, a Gateway with a 2.8 GHz P4, 80 gig HD, 512 MB RAM upgradeable to 1.5 G, 15" screen, DVD-RW and an AC power cord. No systems disk though, no software, only XP Home installed. I was able to activate XP and I'm off to go. I'll be loading my Nav software and getting a data cable for my nav station GPS unit. Check out your local pawn shop. Much lower price and they are negotiable on price. From my point of view, the best bang for your buck. sunnyeagle Posted April 26, 2008 Posted April 26, 2008 I'll check out cyberpowerpc.com. I have been checking out laptops for years. Finally have enough money for one, but trying to stay under 1600. I have built computers and repair them, but never had a laptop. I had work on a few, but only on the software side. So now I would like to get one that will last. sunnyeagle Posted April 26, 2008 Posted April 26, 2008 I checked out cyberpowerpc.com and they are a renamed product. They are actually MSI laptop. I can get more of a laptop (MSI) for less money from zipzoomfly. I still looking from people here on this forum that use laptop. I did not know MSI made laptops until this year. suedenim Posted April 26, 2008 Posted April 26, 2008 Why not consider linux as you are only playing movies/music and doing web stuff. This will certainly reduce the amount of umph you need. Would headphones work instead of speakers?
Thasp Posted April 26, 2008 Posted April 26, 2008 I recommend the Macbook Pro on ebay, the penryn ones, and the ibm thinkpad t61. both awesome machines. there is no such thing as a laptop with good speakers. get nice headphones. wevsspot Posted April 26, 2008 Posted April 26, 2008 If you don't want to break the bank, and want a laptop that won't cause you to commit suicide if you ruin it, then you seriously need to consider the new lineup of Dell Vostros. Specifically the Vostro 1500 series. They aren't pretty, but they won't set you back an arm and a leg either. Plus you can order it with Windows XP Professional instead of Vista. Spec it out how you want it. If you want a serious bargain on a great laptop that looks cool too, you need to check out this one; http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16834220296
Branjo Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 I just bought this one from BestBuy yesterday and its a sweet little laptop, was on sale yesterday for 500 bucks. Had a hell of a time finding drivers for XP as it came with Vista SP1 on it. Had to use drivers for its XP cousin which was basically the identical laptop except for CPU, RAM and HDD capacity. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?sk...5#productdetail Spent about an hour trying to get it to work with my wireless router and then I happened to look under it and there was a switch to turn the wifi on, Doh what will they think of next lol
