Recommend me a sports car

Hey guys,

After some thought I decided to buy an old(er) sports car for about $6-7k. I never used a sports car before so please help me what to focus on for my budget. I prefer to get a local one or something within 100 miles (Boston is in the radius).

I considered a 85 corvette, 95 nissan 300zx, and 84 porsche 944 by checking out the craigslist. And today, I drove the 944. Even tough it looks great for my taste, the seller didn't know the exact mileage - it says 60k but he claimed that his mechanic said that it should be something close to 100k. The good thing is he changed the timing belt, water pump and related parts 15 months ago (1000 miles ago) for $1800. The bad thing is it was a MESS inside the car - seats ripped badly in several spots, he didn't clean the interior at all with tons of dog's hair, etc (felt like he didn't care much). I have pics and perhaps I can host them for you. He is asking for $2,600 which is not bad...

In any case, please let me know if you had up to $7k what sports car would you buy? If you can include the model year and specific reasons for why you select it, I will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks...

PS: Please don't tell me to buy a RELIABLE car with my money. This time I want to get a sports car... Here is a small write-up of my thoughts earlier this week:

[RANT starts]

Last 10 years I have been driving mostly JUNK cars - except my 2 beetles from 74. It was a blast to drive them and I terrorized the roads for 3 years when I was young.

As a latecomer generation x (born in 79), living in this highly-changing, make-you-spend-money world I started to believe 40-years-old crisis hitting me 12 years erlier, at the age of 28.

I have this UNbelievable urge to buy an UNreliable, fast-but-stupid car whether it coud be a 85 vette, 95 300zx, or something else...

I am sick of looking for a 'reliable' car or listening most 'logical' thoughts that my brain sends to my pocket.

I am giving my 90 protege to my wife (new driver), so this is going to be my car and I am sooo bored looking into high mileage and semi-dependable (all used cars IMO) cars.

Really it depends on the style of car you like. I like older muscle type cars. Some suggestions just off the top of my head are:

66-67 Chevy Nova

68-74 Chevy Nova

66-72 Chevy Chevelle

66 Ford Fairlane

61-67 Ford Falcon

66-67 Pontiac Le Mans

I suggest browsing ebay just to get ideas of what you like. I've spent countless hours searching ebay for that one car/truck/motorcycle that catches my eye.

My next purchase is going to be a '87 Honda Super Magna (they look freaking badass)

I would try to find a killer 67-69 Dodge Charger 440R/T that had a straight frame and no body rust (hyuk hyuk, especially in the NE where they lay salt down all winter, or at least they used to as all those cars would show up in FL with their bottoms and bodies rusted out hehe) and then restore it myself.

Or a 65-69 Ford Mustang, Dodge Challenger, Super Bee, possibly even a Camaro or Chevelle (though those two are so prevalent I'd never really consider one, sorta like Mustangs, but I have an affinity for Mustangs).

Some 60's muscle car is what I've always wanted. I don't want one already restored though, I want to do it myself (or have it done under my supervision). Hardest part about these old cars is finding one that isn't wrecked, bent framed, or rusted.

That's just me and what i like though.

raider, looks is going to be important this time but generally (not always) I don't like big-old muscle cars - so no nova, falcon, or fairline... I like old vette's, cobra's, porsche's just to give some example...

Porsche FTW :D:D:D:D

I'd say any of the 9xx or Carrera series would be a good choice.

I myself would love to own a Porsche; especially the 2005 Carrera GT (in my sig) but they're still pretty pricey, ~300K (MSRP was 450K)

OK, new targets:

95 300zx, $6700, 78k: http://maine.craigslist.org/car/395761208.html

00 miata, $6500, 117k: http://boston.craigslist.org/nwb/car/400675992.html or for more pics: http://24.128.75.10/

99 miata, $7300, 71k: http://boston.craigslist.org/sob/car/398976428.html

I will try to check the 300zx by Wednesday - hopefully no-one already bought it. I sent an e-mail to the owner last week and he told me that someone was going to check it... Lady luck!

I was hoping you had a larger budget or something then I would have recommended a Lancer Evo. I'd say take a nice look at the 300ZX for sure over the Miatas but that could be just personal preference. I wouldn't mind a Miata if I had the money to put into it to make it a little beefier but they are just too dainty stock. The new Miatas are sick though I saw one in Van not too long ago and they definitely improved in all areas. You'll get more approval from people who know their cars with the 300ZX over the Miatas as well. Plus there aren't as many people driving them so its a little more exotic and who doesn't like that right? My vote for the Nissan.

Miata's are fun little cars.... and so are the old Mini coopers... you guys pay a lot moreover there though... back home (England) they go for under 1K, even with a bunch of Mods and rebuilds... and you can stick a ford escort engine in some models and fly :-)

That 300ZX looks good, great cars to drive, fairly comfortable and zippy :-)

Here are a few I found on *gag* ebay motors... all are within 250 miles of Boston... (or so ebay says)

My first choice - http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2001-VOLKSW...tem190141663276

I don't really like this one, but you might...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1995-Mustan...tem280142907224

This one is a pretty decent price... it's not gonna sell because the reserve isn't meet, so contact the seller before he re-lists and offer him 5K and you would probably get it...
