Cuz he and I were talking in the big case thread about cameras, and I am interested in a new digicam, preferrably an SLR type but those are about $500 which is too much...

but I'm no expert in digicams, so I made this thread to let mr wing (hahahahaha!) and anyone else with knowledge help us choose a digicam...maybe even make a good tutorial on how to shop for one?

You get what you pay for. The sharpest photos with good color and contrast are achieved with shooting thru good glass. Something you only get with a dSLR. There are cheap lenses that give ok results, and there are good (read expensive) lenses that give great results. You can find used ones in excellent condition for a heck of a lot less as people sell them off to get the “latest and greatest” technology. Two good entry level bodies below. New ones.

Nikon D50

Canon EOS Digital Rebel

ok how about a camera that is sub-$300.00, can do great Macro, can take excellent fast moving images (ie: sports) and does excellent normal shots

I don't think you'll find a sub-$300 camera that does all that. Here's one that got good reviews at a really good price:

I've heard some good things about the Panasonic DMC-FZ30 as well, but it's out

of your price range ($530). I wanted that one, but it was a little too much at the

time - I ended up getting a Casio EX-Z120. My next camera will be a dSLR though,

either the Canon Digital Rebel or one of the EOS (10D, 20D).

Here's a few web sites to check out:

That would be the Olympus E100-RS.

Just a little under 1.5 mega-pix., but will take 6 shots before you fully depress the shutter, and has shutter speed of down to 1/10,000 of a second at 15 fps. That's stills, not "movie mode".

Also has built in 10X zoom and anti-shake.

May be kinda hard to find now, but still unmatched.

Great review and full specs. at Steves Digicam here.

This thing freezes humming birds and airplane propellers.

EDIT: Nuts, the price has gone up. Best price I found now is $597 here. Of course, that's new. Might find a used one much cheeper.

That much has been done.

Just use the main website above - talk about knowledgable in-depth reviews.

And a ton of "standard" photos you can compair from different cameras.

There are other good review sites, but I think this is by far the best.

You're really gonna have a hard time with the "under" 300.00 price...

Unless you really need a new camera right this minute I'd save up and go with a Digital SLR. I hate the feel of the lil consumer point and shoot types (smallish and no "heft" to them) and you'll be hard pressed to find a good one in your range. Go to your local Camera shop/Bestbuy/Circuitcity or where ever they have cameras on display and play with a bunch of different formats. Find something that is comfy and balanced in yer hand. Play with all the buttons. Kinda like buyin shoes...what may appeal to your eye may not fit too swell. Realisticly they all perform close enough to each other to go with what "feels" the best to YOU.

I picked up Nikon D50 recently and it's way more camera than I need but certainly something I can grow into. Quality feel, fit and finish. The Canon rebels feel cheap (and look cheap) and just didn't feel right in my hand...

Save up and be prepared to spend 500+...

My .02 cents

ya thats the advice I always preach (save your money and buy the one you WANT instead of just settling)

but then again I really don't need such a camera...I really NEED a camera that can do good macro and take screenshots of bios screens but I dont NEED a camera that can do sports/fast action honestly...that is just something I WANT...but I have more pressing WANTS so I need to fulfill the NEED with something that is $300 or less lol

Good thread, I am also interested in getting a decent camera. I picked up a $99 dollar special to do ebay stuff with and it works fine for that but isn't so hot when trying to catch something like my race car when it leaves the line. I am looking at the Nikon D50 myself, willing to save up for it if it is as good a unit as said. I don't take many pics but would like the ones I do take to be of nice quality.
